John was born on March 25, 1966 in Arlington, Texas to Rodney McGrew Sr. and Susan McGrew. At the age of 2 John’s parents moved to the Keller area where he attended elementary, middle school and high school.
John graduated from Keller High School in 1984. During his time there, John played football, baseball, basketball and participated in Rodeo Team Roping which grew to be one of his passions. John was selected by his peers as “Mr. KHS” a title that his fellow officers at Keller PD would continually and humorously remind him of years later. After graduation John attended Sam Houston College before beginning a career in law enforcement.
He attended police academy and joined the Watauga Police Department after graduation. John would later retire from the Keller Police Department in 2015 after serving with them for 25 years. John quickly rose through the ranks of Corporal and Sergeant because of his dedication and commitment to the organization, as well as the citizens of Keller. John was well respected by his peers as an active and dedicated police officer, field training officer, detective and supervisor. During his career with Keller, John was awarded Supervisor of the Year in 2002 along with several other awards from his peers and the community. John wore many hats in the department throughout his career including bike patrol, mounted patrol, SWAT, juvenile investigations, supervisor and criminal investigation supervisor. John was a TCOLE instructor, firearms instructor, chemical weapons instructor and led the departments training on Standardized Field Sobriety Testing for DWI investigation.
John’s passion for horses led him to develop a program to help at risk children at his ranch in Decatur called Rocking M Arena. He worked with children to teach them to love and care for horses while mentoring them to lead a better path in life.
He enjoyed team roping so much that he began volunteering with Johnson County Wild Riders 4-H Club so that he could share his love for horses with others. John also served for the last 4 years as Vice President of the 4-H club.
John was an avid hunter and enjoyed the hunting seasons.
John’s legacy will be continued by the numerous people he has mentored over the years and has left many memories to be cherished.
John was a dedicated son, brother, boyfriend, father figure, proud uncle and friend.
John is survived by his mother Susan McGrew, brother Rodney McGrew and wife Charlotte McGrew, sister Ronda McGrew Watts and husband Scott Watts, 8 nieces and nephews, 10 great nieces and nephews, girlfriend Melinda Clark and her daughter Allyssa Clark.
John will be greatly missed.
