Joe worked for the Dunn Brothers Company of Dallas, and drove a truck all over the United States to lay pipes. He also worked as a ranch hand for Cross Creek Ranch in Grapevine, Texas, as well as an employee for the City of Irving Water Department. When he retired, he and Lorraine bought land in Roanoke, where they both lived for many years before moving to east Texas to be near their nephew Billy Dale Patterson. He took care of them both until their deaths.
Joe loved to hunt and fish, traveling near and far to get to a fishing hole. He also loved to travel, mostly to east Texas and the areas surrounding Big Bend National Park. He is preceded in death by his wife; Blanche Lorraine Patterson Thomas; his parents, brothers; J.W. (Bud Thomas, Carl Franklin (Sunny), and Donald Leland Thomas, sisters; Ruby Lucille May, Stella May Nelson, Betty Jean Parrish, Alma Faye Evans, and Dorothy Gertrude Hayes. He is survived by his only child;Donna Kay Fishback and her husband Bart, 6 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Robert Sandlin, sister-in-law Florene Thomas, sisters Mary Raye Reed and Wanda Louise Thomas, and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
