Debbie passed away at her home in Flower Mound, Texas, surrounded by her loving husband, her sister, and her two daughters. Debbie fought a long hard battle with Metastatic Breast Cancer for two years after a late diagnosis.
Debbie was so good at self-advocating her health concerns and needs, that if it wasn’t for her attention to detail and tenacity, we are sure we would have had even less time with her then we did. Debbie was sent home being told she only had three days to live. She yet again proved the doctors wrong as she stayed with us for a whole month. I am certain to make sure we were alright and taken care of. Debbie was the ultimate caretaker, and was always aware of others' needs, right up until the last days.
Debbie was born to Hugh M. Pittman and Bettie M. Bennett on September 17, 1956. Debbie grew up in El Paso with her two siblings Kathy, and Hugh. As a child Debbie had fond memories camping on The Catwalk Trail on White Water Creek in Glen Wood, New Mexico. During her last days she enjoyed falling asleep to the sounds and memories of that creek through a comparable video on YouTube.
Debbie graduated from Eastwood High School in 1974. Then went on to attend The University of Texas at El Paso where she earned her Bachelor degree in psychology and met the man she would spend the next 43 years of her life with. Debbie finished her degree early in December 1977. Just a couple months prior to that a newly appointed 2nd Lieutenant (Army) was in El Paso from his hometown of Luck, Wisconsin for officer basic training; walked into the bookstore where Debbie worked looking for a present for his grandfather's birthday. After what must have been the perfect book recommendation; Bill frequented the bookstore Debbie worked at for another two years before convincing Debbie that he was “The One.”
Bill and Debbie were married on June 23, 1979. They spent most anniversaries enjoying their life together and planning their future. However, their last anniversary was spent in the hospital, planning Bill's future without Debbie. They both toasted to what they knew would be their last anniversary together. Bill and Debbie had two wonderful daughters whose sense of humor and fun loving natures kept them busy through the early years of their marriage. Debbie's youngest daughter was born with Downs and also born to the perfect mother for her unique needs. Debbie took pride in her role as Bill's wife and Christine and Kimberly’s mother. Her dedication to her God given position showed in every decision she made and everything she did.
Later on in life Debbie welcomed three beautiful grandchildren through Christine and her husband Justen. Debbie was by Christine’s side through each of her grandchildren's’ birth and loved everyone of them as if they were her own the minute she laid eyes on each one. Phoebe, her first grandchild, was so special to her. She would refer to Phoebe as “her little Christine.” She experienced great joy in watching her reach milestones and grow into the beautiful lady she is today. After Phoebe, Debbie welcomed her first grandson William and often laughed at all the new typical boy things Christine was getting to experience as a boy mom that she never did. William loved to make his grandma laugh. Last but not least, was Ben who was her birthday buddy as their birthdays were just two days from each other. Ben is the baby and knows his role well, and Debbie helped Christine encourage it.
Debbie was a shy person but could be fierce in her dedication and loyalty to family and friends. Debbie’s dedication and loyalty also could be seen in every position she held as a working professional. From one of her first beloved positions working the bookstore in college to her last twenty years she committed to the Lewisville Independent School District. She was detailed, dedicated, and amazingly accurate in keeping everyone around her supported and in the loop of projects and resources. She made many friends working with the school district who continued to show her love and support after she came home, and during her last days. She took great comfort and appreciation in those visits, texts, and phone calls.
As Debbie walked through the gates of heaven she was greeted by a number of her past furry friends. Debbie was an animal lover through and through. From hummingbirds, to cardinals, to dogs, and cats. Cats and hummingbirds held a special place in her heart. In her last days she especially wanted to make sure the hummingbirds outside were still being taken care of and fed. She truly had a caretaker's heart, even in her final days, when she was being the one taken care of.
Debbie and Bill's favorite memories were made while cruising around the world on different beautiful ships. Their last cruise was in 2019. It was the Fall Foliage Cruise that took place on the Queen Mary. It sailed from Quebec, Canada along the St. Lawrence Seaway to New York City, stopping all along the way. Another one of Debbie’s favorite cruises was in 2010 when they traveled to Alaska on another beautiful cruise ship. Bill and Debbie enjoyed cruises all throughout their 43 years of marriage.
Debbie is survived by her loving husband Bill; her oldest daughter Christine Jeanine Burnham and her husband Justen of Lewisville, TX, her youngest daughter Kimberly Callie of Flower Mound, TX; her dad, Hugh Pittman Sr. of El Paso; her brother Hugh Pittman and his wife Terri of Kerrville, TX; her sister Kathy Sukon and her husband Darrell of El Paso; her grandchildren Phoebe, William, and Ben. As well as numerous nieces and nephews.
God needed another angel, she will be greatly missed.
A celebration of Debbie’s life will be held on Saturday August 27, 2022 at 10:30 am at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home, 5725 Colleyville Blvd., Colleyville, Texas 76034.
