Mrs. Alma W Young

She was able to celebrate her 100th Birthday in April, a goal she dearly wanted to reach. However, COVID-19 invaded her Assisted Living Facility in recent weeks and claimed her as another victim.

Alma, the first of 5 children, was born April 25, 1920, on a ranch outside of Rio Grande City, Texas. Her parents were Sofia Guerra West and Jesse Eugene West. She and her father were descendants of Claiborne West, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Her 4 siblings preceded her in death.

She was raised mostly in Hebbronville, Texas, before moving with her parents to Laredo, Texas. She married David Young in Laredo on September 12, 1940. The marriage lasted until his death in January 2000.

Survivors are her daughter, Diane and husband Morris Shaffer and son, David and wife Lee Anne Young; 4 grandchildren, Angela and husband Mark Smith, Bradley Wayne Shaffer, Julie Young Weidenbach, David Edward Young; and 4 great-grandchildren, Amanda Smith, Amber Smith Gibson, Sara Weidenbach, and Cameron Shaffer.

After living in South and West Texas, she and David settled permanently in Bedford in 1963. She worked for Lone Star Gas Company for over 25 years before retiring. She enjoyed cooking and baking, embroidering, gardening, arts/crafts, traveling, and being with her family.

We are grateful to God that he let us have her as a part of our lives for so long, but we will still miss her.
