Myra Caroline (Buck) Bright

Myra was born on September 9, 1933 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Rev. Raymond Sr. and Lydia Mehrtens Buck. She married Arthur Bright, her husband of 61 years, on June 9, 1953 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Myra worked for more than 35 years in the Texas A&M System, retiring in 1993 as assistant director of Texas Transportation Institute (TTI). During her tenure with the Texas A&M System, never one to stop moving forward, Myra achieved her Bachelor of Science degree from Sam Houston State University in the late 1960s. Following her retirement from the Texas A&M System, Myra and Art were hired by College Station ISD to manage the school system’s energy consumption, which they did until 2010.

Myra and Art built the first home in College Station’s Raintree Subdivision in 1979 and Myra lived there until 2018. To honor both Myra and Art, the Raintree Homeowners Association renamed the Raintree Park to the Art and Myra Bright Park in 2015 to recognize their generous donation of time and resources to several community organizations.

Myra loved to play both organ and piano, and provided more than fifty years of music ministry to Faith United Church of Christ, a church her father established in 1954, and Christ United Methodist Church until her health precluded her continuation. She loved New Orleans, chicory coffee, beignets and Mardi Gras’ Kings Cakes. She had an affection for Liberace’s music, who, family lore had, ate on more than one occasion at the breakfast table of her aunts when he played a restaurant down the street in his early days in New Orleans.

Her husband, Arthur Bright; brother, Raymond Buck Jr.; sister, Bliss Buck Wolfe; and great-grandson Connor Mahlmann preceded her in death.

Myra is survived by her two daughters, Janice Attaway and husband Emmitt and Kathy Symank and husband Doug all of College Station; her grandchildren, Jaclyn Symank Mahlmann and husband Michael of Corpus Christi, TX; Christel Attaway Garcia and husband Gabriel of Cypress, TX.; and Emmitt Dean Attaway and his wife Holly of New Boston, TX; and six great-grandchildren, Spencer Mahlmann, Chrissly Garcia, Addeline Garcia, Brightly Garcia, Gunnar Attaway and Hallie Attaway. Additionally she is survived by her brother-in-law, Dick Wolfe, sister-in-law, Alice Buck, and numerous nephews and nieces, and extended family.

Myra will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband at College Station City Cemetery in a private service prior to a Celebration of Life Ceremony held Monday, February 11, 2019 at 4:00 P.M. at Christ United Methodist Church located at 4201 Highway 6 in College Station.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Christ United Methodist Church, Faith United Church of Christ, Hospice Brazos Valley, and the Art and Myra Bright Scholarship, CSISD Education Foundation.
