Eda Magdelena (Andres) Merrick was married to Donald Merrick on December 4, 1954 until his death on November 3, 2010. Her son Larry Merrick and daughter Karen Merrick preceded her in death. A special thank you to the staff at Enchanted Pines Assisted Living and Luminos Hospice.
Eda is survived by her daughters Diana Derby and her husband John of Wheelock, TX: Cindy Ridens of College Station, TX; and Carol Emery and her husband Joe of Grapeland, TX. She was incredibly proud of her grandchildren and let them know often. Steven Merrick and his wife Megan, Micah Merrick and his wife Julie, Christa Merrick, Justin Lund and his wife Rachel, Jeremy Lund, Courtney Dorn and her husband Ty, Amber Ridens, Hailey Emery and her partner Daniel Barnett, Cody Ridens and his wife Tawnee, Alex Emery and his wife Emma and Michael Kramer.
Eda’s great-grandchildren were the light of her life. Heidi and Tommy Merrick, Emma Dorn, Grayson Kramer, Louise Barnett and Skylee Ridens who will always remember her hugs and kisses and “Gramma Jammas”..
Eda loved her family and had a strong Faith in God. She enjoyed Sewing, Gardening, Reading,
Puzzles, Crosswords and Word Search games. She loved when her family was all together, for a Holiday, barbeque or brunch. She made custom Christmas Stockings for all her family and her “Gramma Jammas” were loved by all. She made hundreds for family and their friends. She even made them for all of Amber’s volleyball teams! She didn’t need a special occasion to make us Brownies or Yum Yum Cake. We will treasure the Quilts she made.
Diana, Cindy and Carol remember summers in Idaho and trips to Big Bear Mountain where we made snow-cones with snow and Hawaiian Punch Syrup. Laying in the Living Room listening to Polkas and Waltzes with her. Mom was supportive of our Band parades, swim meets and concerts. As we grew up, she was always baking something for us. It was just one of the things she did to show us she loved us.
She took the time to be the Cub Scout Pack Leader for Larry and taught Diana to waltz in the living room. They were both grateful she married their dad and made them very happy. Cindy and Carol remember Thanksgiving dinners putting olives on our fingertips and Saturdays popping popcorn and putting it in brown paper sacks for movie nights. We knew we could always count on mom. She worked hard to give us a good life and she did.
As a devoted grandma she chauffeured her grandchildren to appointments, was a Field trip chaperone and classroom volunteer. She was their biggest fan and attended countless Baseball, Basketball, Bowling, Cross Country, Soccer and Volleyball events to cheer them on.
Steven remembers going to Germany with her and visiting all the Churches and Beer Gardens and that she always told him how proud she was of him.
Micha and Christa remember grandma letting them climb the fence to pick pomegranates in the neighbor's yard.
Justin remembers that she always made sure I knew she was proud of me. Be it for some achievement or just during idle conversation, she made it a point “to hug me, kiss me on the cheek, and tell me how proud she was."
Jeremy’s favorite memory was sitting on the floor watching “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” with her. He also remembers being her “Tech Guy”. He loved Grandma's Brownies.
Courtney remembers that Grandma was an amazing, sweet, and caring grandma and Oma. She will treasure their time together and memories they made. Her bond with Emma will not be forgotten.
Amber loved going to Grandma’s and eating all the Raspberries before she could pick them and going to M&L Fabrics to look for flannel. She remembers having Grandma go all over the US to support her playing Volleyball. She remembers running down the departure tarmac screaming and crying because she didn’t want grandma to leave. People thought her mom was kidnapping her. Grandma was proud of what she accomplished while playing Volleyball and made sure she knew it.
Haley's most special thoughts about Grandma are how she told me (lovingly), that she was proud of me and how I’ve worked hard to blend mine and Daniel’s kids, especially being such a “Wild Child” I was when I was younger.
Cody loved going “shopping for Snacks” when Grandma lived next door and having her walk with him to school every morning. He also remembers cooking with Grandma and standing on a stool so he could reach the counter. They made pillows together that he still has.
Alex’s favorite memory was that she always showed how much she cared for me by baking me brownies for my birthday every year. I know she cared for me in those moments because it would always be followed by her saying “make sure you hide these from your Dad.”
Her great-grandchildren remember their “Gramma Jammas” and that she loved them very much.
Mom, Grandma and Oma you will be greatly missed by family and friends. We love you very much!
