Ann Harper

Ann Harper, 83, of College Station, passed away Saturday Morning, June 29, 2013 at her home with her loving family. The ceremony will take place at 10: 00 A.m. on Saturday morning July 20 at the Covenant Presbyterian Church on Rock Prairie in College Station.

Sara Ann was born in Eastman, Georgia to Eva and Wilbur Ratcliff. The early years of Ann’s life were influenced by many creative activities at home, school, and community in Shreveport, La. She was the oldest of six children. She received a Bachelor degree in Architecture from Oklahoma State University in 1953, where she met her husband Weston Harper. After 30 years in a design related career at Texas A&M University, she retired and resumed painting in 1994.

Ann described her love of painting as follows:

“With a clear mind, I begin painting on water color paper with water media washes where the colors likely represent suppressed emotion. As intuitive layers are applied, organic forms usually emerge. Often a struggle ensues between conscious judgment and my free spirit. Eventually, I begin to acquire insight and my work finally takes direction. Conscious additional layers help organize the expression I wish to convey as a result of an exhilarating and peaceful healing process.”

Ann served as Vice President of Bryan College Station Branch of the American Association of University Women. Her art has been displayed as local galleries, and she has received numerous awards for her paintings.

Ann Harper is preceded in death by her son Kim Harper, her sister Dorothy Benton, and her parents Eva and Wilbur Ratcliff.

She is survived my her husband Weston Harper; one son, Bill Harper, and his wife Kristin; one daughter, Holli Harper, and her husband Frank Moore; daughter-in-law Lynn Harper; her two sisters Helen Boyce and Betty Neal; her two brothers Braxton Ratcliff and James Ratcliff; her grandchildren Ryan and Travis Harper, Matthew and Calli Moore, and Lucy Harper.
