Monday, Sept 6, 2021. James was born in Atlanta to Claude Henry and Edith Jackson Rountree on 2/15/1939, the youngest of 4 children.
He was a graduate, class of 1957, of Russell High School. It was there he met the love of his life, Evoline Christian. They were married on May 24, 1957. After making a home in Riverdale, GA, he began a 38 year career with the City of East Point Water Works. Then there were two children, Jeff and Beth, requiring more space and closer schools. Thus, a move to College Park, GA where they would live until 1996.
James and Evoline enjoyed camping at the lake, fishing, their yard, friends, crafts and hobbies while living in College Park. James enjoyed many successful years umpiring baseball and softball. He was an Umpire in the 1983 Girls ASA National Championship series. He loved watching the Little League World Series as well as his Braves on TV.
The Fulton County Airport Authority advised them that their home was needed for a fifth runway, requiring
them to relocate. James found the house he had always wanted in East Point with a large lot, magnificent oak trees, and birds that he cherished. It was only two blocks from his workplace.
In 1988 Evoline was suddenly and seriously disabled at the age of 49. James became her dedicated caregiver for the last 20 years of their 51 year marriage, retiring in 1999 to stay with her full time. Evoline died in 2008. His devotion and unwavering care for all those years is a testament to his character, an affirmation of a life well lived.
James was a long time member of College Park First United Methodist Church and a devout friend to the
United Methodists Children’s Home. His knowledge of the history of East Point was respected by all. After
Evoline’s passing, James began volunteering at the East Point History Center. Filling in the gaps for the who, what, when and where about East Point was very rewarding for him. He was known by most and respected by all. His neighbors in East Point called on him to help with their home and yard maintenance issues for he was an excellent mechanic and innovator.
In his last few years James reconnected with a high school classmate, Dianne Savage. They were able to
travel and enjoy activities that James had chosen to forgo during the years he had been a caregiver. The family is grateful for their friendship.
James was preceded in death by his wife; daughter, Kelley Elizabeth Davis; brothers, Henry Rountree and John Rountree and one sister, Judy Newton. He leaves behind his son and wife, Jeff and Andi Rountree of Smyrna, GA. His granddaughters and their husbands, Ashley and Marcus Rowell of Dallas, GA; Afton and Adam Hall of Lexington, NC. 4 great-grandchildren, Emma, Everly, Oliver and Bowen James. He is also survived by many loving and caring nieces and nephews.
We bid you adieu and love you, our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend forever.
