William (Bill) Robert Layton Jr, age 83 of Brazoria Texas, crossed the finish line with a checkered flag on October 25th, 2023. Bill was born on December 17, 1939, in Canal Fulton, OH to the late William R. Layton Sr. and Gladys Keefauver.
Bill was a proud veteran of the US Army. Shortly after being discharged, a young girl named Barbara caught his eye. One month later, they eloped, and they went on to spend 54 years together. They were blessed with three children and five grandchildren. Before retiring, he was an automotive business owner and an ASC Certified Master Automotive technician. During this time, he mentored many new mechanics. Bill loved all kinds of auto racing, whether it was driving his own dragster, acting as crew chief for his son John, or working as a professional crew chief in the NHRA. He had numerous race cars and held an NHRA national record. Later in life he traded in his time slips and ventured into dirt track, racing go-carts with his grandchildren. He also loved motorcycle riding and traveling throughout the country on his Road King with his wife Barbara. He made many lifelong friends along the way. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and supporting their interests, attending sporting and school events. After Barbara’s passing, he married his wife Linda in 2015. He introduced her to motorcycles and took her to her first motorcycle rally for their honeymoon.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Clute. The highlight of Bill’s church service each Sunday and on special occasions was singing. Sometimes Linda would have to hush him while the soloist sang the special. He would just grin and keep singing. One of the blessings of his marriage to Linda was being adopted into the lives of Linda’s special sisters, their husbands, and his church family.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Barbara Layton. He is also preceded by his brothers Charles Keefauver, Gary Pospichel, and Frank Pospichel.
He is survived by his second wife of 8 years, Linda Sutton Layton, daughter, Belinda [Scott] Bradley, son, John [Sharon] Layton, and daughter, Patricia Miller. Grandchildren, Danielle [Michael] Ramey, Matthew [Lauren] Miller, Nicholas Layton, Bruce [Kacie] Layton, Lindsay Miller. Brother Jeff Layton. Extended family, son, Jimmy Green [Brenda], and grandchildren Josh [Sara] Green, Tyler [Raquel] Green, Raegen [Jimmy] Brooks. He leaves behind a total of 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to personally thank the staff of Davita in Lake Jackson for the compassionate care they showed for over four years, where Bill became known as the “sweetheart” for his cooperative attitude to all the technicians. Thank you to the staff of Dr. Aglieco and Brazosport Cardiology staff. Also thank you to friends and family for your support and encouragement in keeping his life as normal as possible during these last four years. He loved you all.
A celebration of Bill’s life will take place at Forest Park South Funeral Home, 12650 Shadow Creek Parkway, Pearland Texas at 10:00 am on Friday, November 3, 2023. Officiated by Gerry Sutton, Josh McGee, and David Lopez. Visitation will be held from 9am to 10am.
