Carol was born in Erie, Pennsylvania on December 24, 1939. She graduated from Harborcreek Highschool in 1957, salutatorian of her class, a snappy marching majorette on the field, and the queen of her senior prom. Carol inherited her artistic ability from her German Grandfather, a Lithographer. She studied art at Penn State University, earning a BA in Art Education. Carol’s artwork can be found in local homes, shops and museums. One work she is especially known for is the Old Brazosport Lighthouse.
At the age of 14, Carol met her future husband John when the two started their 9th grade at Harborcreek High. They stayed together though high school and college, marrying in the First Presbyterian Church in Harborcreek, Pennsylvania on August 20, 1960, with Reverend Cyrus Morehead performing the ceremony. Carol and the family followed John on several assignments with Dow Chemical, living in Michigan, Australia, Louisiana, Holland and finally moving to Texas, where the family took root for 52 years.
Carol’s hobbies included art, and she worked in oils, watercolor and pencil. She painted mostly by inspiration but also did some work on commission. She was a member of the Brazosport Art League. An avid birder, she blended that hobby with her art and photography skills. Gardening was another one of her favorite pass times. She also loved to travel and enjoyed the families time to Australia, Europe and Alaska.
She inherited a drive for perfection, and this was evident, for example in her housecleaning practices, where everything had to be sparkly clean and in its place. All the pictures on the walls had to be straight and checked each day. Even when out walking on Brazosport College track, she would stop and pick up any trash or sticks on the path. One of her grandkids reported this cleanup discipline to The Facts, and they published an article about her.
To say Carol was an active person is a major understatement. She had unlimited energy, enjoying every minute of her 81 years, until stricken by Alzheimer’s.
The family is thankful for the assistance and care provided by Hospice, Caring Senior Services, Help Inc, independent health care givers, the Gathering Place, and member care at the Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church where Carol is a member, as well as good friends and neighbors.
