Anne was born in Escalon, CA on March 1, 1938 to Glenn H. Baker, Sr. and Alice M. (Daniel) Baker, and passed away on September 15, 2020 with her husband of 36 years, David E. Powell, at her side. Anne had a strong faith in God, whom she called on in life’s challenges. Anne has many long-time friends, some continuing from school. Anne enjoyed her family, friends, neighbors, her home, garden, animals, crafts, butterflies and camping. Anne worked and volunteered in the disability, blind, Deaf and Deaf-Blind communities for many years.
Anne was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn H. Baker, Sr. and mother Alice M. Baker; her step-mother Ruby A. Baker; her brother, Glenn H. Baker, Jr. and her step-sister, Linda Kizziar.
She is survived by her loving husband, David E. Powell of Clovis, CA; son, Kevin L. Baker and his wife Quenette and their children David and Melody of Aguanga, CA; her sister-in-law Patricia L. Baker of Clovis, CA; step-sister Carolyn Jacobs of Novato, CA; and cousin Thomas Andreas of Mission Viejo, CA. Anne is also survived by several nieces and nephews and a large extended family who loved her very much.
At age 2 Anne developed spinal meningitis which nearly took her life and left her with total hearing loss and partial blindness. At 5 she went to the School for the Deaf in Fresno High School. When they realized she could not see enough to read lips they took her to Mrs. Tracey School for the Deaf in the LA area to learn speech by using a headset and feeling vibration of voice on the throat.
Mrs. Tracey then suggested Berkeley School for the Blind where she was accepted at age 8. Anne flourished and excelled in learning many things like reading and writing braille, and graduated 11 years later in 1957 having become a poised young lady. Her family celebrated her graduation with a huge “Pink Tea” event. In 1960 Anne took classes in FCC for 2 years. She was a member of NCADB since 1977 and enjoyed the yearly camping trips. She volunteered and trained at a veterinarian hospital in Clovis, CA. Not finding employment in the Fresno area, she moved to Oakland in 1981. Berkeley CIL assisted Anne with finding an apartment and she attended workshops at the Lions Blind Center in Oakland for 2 years, then became a Teacher’s Aid for clients with disabilities for 5 years. In 1981 she met the love of her life, David Powell, became engaged in 1983 and married in 1984. She became a Counselor Aid for workshops until 1988 when her heart problems worsened, causing her to stop working, retiring on SSA from that point. After her husband David’s parents died [father 1993, mother 1994], Anne’s family encouraged them to move to Clovis to be near her family. Anne and David bought their lot in October of 1994 and when the house was completed in April of 1995 they moved into Stonebrook, where they have lived happily for 25 years.
Anne will be laid to rest in Clovis Cemetery. Due to the pandemic there will be no Graveside Service.
