Philip P. Leonardi passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 92 on March 22, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to family and community. He was the devoted husband of Irene Kemp Leonardi, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and adventure. Together they built a family filled with love, laughter and many joyful memories. Philip was a loving father to Phillip (Lisa Kidulas), Paul (Robie Caldwell), and Andrea , and a cherished grandfather to Amanda, Christina, and Lorenzo, who adored him for his warmth, caring nature, and, of course, his occasional homemade pizza or pizzelle.
Philip was a beloved brother to Hector Leonardi (Karl Mann) and Tony Leonardi (Judy Damiani) and a devoted brother-in-law to his “favorite sister-in-law” Dana Kemp Lombardi and her husband, and dear friend, Len Lombardi.
A graduate of Sacred Heart High School and Providence College, Class of 1956, Philip returned to his hometown of Waterbury to begin a lifelong career in education. He taught English for over 30 years at Wilby High School, where he ultimately became principal. His commitment to his students and his partnership with the faculty profoundly impacted the lives of thousands of young people, many of whom credit him for guiding them toward success.
Early in his career, Philip was awarded one of the first Fulbright Scholarships, which took him and his young family to Italy, where he taught English in Rome, Catania, and Taormina. The friendships he cultivated during that time lasted a lifetime and were a testament to his warmth and genuine interest in others.
In retirement, Philip and Irene found joy and community at the Island View Beach Association, where he tended his garden and took pride sitting in the shade of the tree he nurtured from a sapling. They also built lasting friendships at The Seagrape in West Palm Beach, Florida, where they enjoyed many memorable moments. The friendships built, most notably Lynn Abraham and the Abraham family, Sue and Mark Turpen and their sons Jeremy and Andy, and all of his neighbors is a testament to his love and devotion to others.
Phil had an extraordinary gift for bringing people together. An amazing cook, he was happiest when his table was surrounded by family and friends, sharing laughter, conversation, and a delicious meal. His warmth, generosity, and genuine love for others left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Philip will be remembered fondly by all who were blessed to be part of his life. His legacy of love, kindness, and service lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and former students.
