Nicholas John Gere of Kennebunkport, ME, passed away peacefully at home with his family present on August 20, 2022. He was 86. Born in 1935 in Meriden, CT, he was the only child of the late Nicholas Gere and Helen (Sabo) Gere. He was raised in Wallingford, CT and graduated from Lyman Hall High School where he enjoyed playing basketball. Nicholas proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy at the end of the Korean War and enjoyed visiting many ports of call around the world on the USS Stephen Potter, a navy destroyer, as a machinist. After the Navy, Nicholas spent his career as a skilled machinist working for various Connecticut companies prior to retiring in 1997.
Nicholas was an avid sports fan, and a lifelong supporter of the NY Giants and Boston Red Sox. He especially enjoyed spending time with his two grandsons, attending their various sporting events and graduations. He always approached life humbly and with good humor, with great caring for family.
Along with his parents, Nicholas is predeceased by his beloved wife, Alice (Brough) Gere and is also predeceased by his first wife, Deanna (Gifford) Gere. Nicholas will be greatly missed by his only child, Nicholas D. Gere, and daughter-in-law Traci Gere of Kennebunkport, ME and his grandsons Nathan Gere of Allston, MA and Elliot Gere of Burlington, VT.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 25th between 11 AM and 1 PM at Swan Funeral Home located at 80 E. Main St, Clinton, CT. There will be a graveside service immediately following at Resurrection Cemetery located at 1080 Horse Hill Rd, Westbrook, CT.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Nicholas’ name to the American Heart Association (heart.org).
