That day in November, when it was 70° and we took our sons to mentor Headlands beach.

We feel blessed to have known Janet. She was always cheerful,  happy and kind. She will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this difficult time.

So many memories of my friend of 4-plus decades. Here's a very specific one from years ago, when we were in our twenties:  Janet was the first person my age I knew to have a new Yorker subscription. I think that is how I came to subscribe to the New Yorker, which I do to this day. I'll always think of Janet when a new one shows up in the mail. Janet collected the covers, and she made me a collage of New Yorker covers, including a cover with a double bass (I'm a bassist). This is just one example of her enthusiasms, culture and humor.

I was fortunate to have met Janet in the later part of the 1970's.  We were even roommates for a short time.  One favorite memory I have is when we wanted to take a vacation, but did not have the money or time.  So, we went to the West side of Cleveland and stayed in a hotel with a swimming pool for a couple of nights.  We explored the beautiful parks and the surrounding area.  It truly felt like we had a vacation out of town!  After I moved to California in 1980, she visited, then I visited Cleveland.  We have kept in touch ever since.  I will miss her for sure.

Janet was a beloved and admirable woman, who I feel fortunate to have been able to count among my friends. My memories of Janet are of a calm and competent presence presiding over a  sometimes chaotic, laughing, and always loving household. Janet's giving in her personal life, and in her giving to me, was mirrored in her execution of her profession. No matter how far we have been in time and geography, I will always treasure our friendship and memories of how her beautiful, broad smile greeted me and every visitor who came to her door.

I wrote these words of remembrance last night with a heavy heart. Janet was the best friend anyone could ever want. We met as high school freshmen in 1967 and became best friends instantly, and though we weren’t always in the same classes, we made up for it after school and on weekends – going to each other’s homes, spending hours at the local one-screen cinema (ensuring no one would sit near us we’d place all of our belongings on the seats in front of and next to us), and taking the train into Manhattan from Queens -quite the adventure. Janet was bubbly and energetic, with a great laugh. It was fun being with her.
We drifted apart after high school and on a whim many years later I called her mother to find out about Janet. As it turned out, she was floating down the Nile on a cruise, and then flying to Israel to visit a friend in Haifa. And so we arranged to meet in Jerusalem. She hadn’t changed at all and it was as if we had just seen each other the day before. The conversation and our friendship restarted and lasted 40 years. 
My friends in NY never understood my enthusiasm for going to Cleveland – especially in the winter. But I always looked forward to my visits; I was embraced as if I was family. Janet, Andy, Maia and Daniel were always warm and welcoming and Janet’s generous spirit of including me in her circle of friends and family were the highlight of my visits. Her joy was infectious and when she came to New York we would take the train to Manhattan and feel as young and adventurous as we did back in high school. I relished every moment we spent together. I will miss her with all my being. May her memory be for a blessing.


My heart and mind are overflowing with a lifetime of memories and love for Janet, my friend since we were 8.  She gave me so much, we shared so much. Life was important, more fun, had so much meaning , Janet, because you were in the world. 

There is no one memory when I think of Janet. There is just all the countless laughs, smiles and fun she gave me and we shared over the years. Her friendship was an important part of my life and she will be very much missed. I am lucky to have had her as a friend and her memory will always be a blessing to me

Janet was a very special friend. Her heart and acceptance of others was her specialty,. She would open her heart and welcome strangers to her home with open arms and greet everyone with a gentle smile and sparkling eyes with an eager anticipation of making a new friend! She loved life,and I  will miss her.
She is now at peace and will remain in my heart with love,alwaysRachelle Neher
