Donald A. Penn

Don was born in Cleveland and remained a resident his entire life. He graduated from Heights High, attended The Ohio State University, and earned a degree in industrial baking from Florida State University. Don then oversaw his family’s retail bakery business, New York Bakery.

Refocusing the business on industrial baking, Don became a pioneer in the frozen foods industry. He developed several products that can still be bought in major stores today. Most well-known is New York Bakery Original Texas Toast.

Don found his work invigorating and remained active and well-respected in the food industry into his early 80s, including a starring role in several New York Bakery commercials alongside his grandchildren.

In his personal life, Don had many interests. He loved to exercise just as much as he loved to eat and rode his bike to his favorite restaurants as often as he could. Don was a prolific artist who explored mediums including wood, clay, metal, paint, and most recently photography. One of his most cherished places was Squire Valleevue Farm. When visiting he often sat on his donated bench next to the bust of Andrew Squire. The family encourages you to visit and enjoy.

Above all, Don was devoted to his family and friends — Predeceased by his wife Judy, and parents Alex and Sylvia, Don is survived by his children Marc Penn (Kim d. 2013), Kimberly Novak, and Stefanie Spear; grandchildren Alexandra, Cory, William, Brittany, Taylor (Ariel), Mitchell, Samantha, Zachary; great-grandson Asher; and brother Sigmund (Phyllis) Penn.

Graveside services will be held at 1 pm on Sunday, March 23 at Bet Olam Cemetery at 25796 Chagrin Blvd., Beachwood, Ohio 44122.

Shiva will be observed following services until 6:00 p.m. at 5 Skyline Drive, Moreland Hills, Ohio 44022.
