CLARE FISCHER (nee Grossman), age 90, passed away January 27, 2020. Beloved wife of Erwin (deceased); devoted mother of Lynne (Steven Haynes) Fischer of FL and Scott (Dr. Lauren Portman) Fischer; loving grandmother of Justin and Dylan Fischer; cherished aunt of Joslyn (Don) Williams.
Clare was born in Czechoslovakia and moved to the U.S. with her mother Ethel Grossman (later Jacobs) as a child. She attended Cleveland Heights High School and then Ohio University but met her husband, Erwin, in her own backyard as his aunt lived next door.
She was a stylist dresser, having been a buyer for Higbees and Sterling Leonard Davis before getting married. She was also an accomplished cook, having learned from the best, her mother.
She and Erwin raised their two children, Lynne and Scott, in Beachwood and later moved to Pepper Pike. She was a wonderful wife and loving, devoted mother. She always said she and Erwin had a lovely life together and she lived a life with love for her family, which she doted on.
Clare was a born leader and her dedication to several philanthropic organizations was exemplary. She enjoyed serving at the executive level for United Order of True Sisters and Women’s American ORT and even helped in their thrift stores. She was also involved with Hadassah earlier in her charitable career.
She also enjoyed everything art. She painted and crocheted and was a prominent feature in the Little Italy art scene where she even helped run a gallery. She also adored going to concerts, especially the Cleveland Philharmonic. But when she wasn’t volunteering or busy raising her children, she and Erwin loved to spent time traveling. When her children were young they travelled all over the U.S, Canada and Mexico, often piled in the back of their station wagon. Later they traveled throughout the Caribbean and to Australia, but her favorites were Greece and Hawaii.
She will be remembered as an adored mother who loved her husband, children, grandchildren, niece, extended family and friends. She had a kind loving heart, never met a stranger, made everyone feel comfortable and was loved by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.
