Allan was a graduate of Clayton High School, graduated from Washington University and went on to receive his master’s in engineering from Case Western Reserve University.
A chance invitation to a bridge game changed his life when there he met the love of his life, Ilene Schneider. His most proud achievement was their nearly 67-year marriage and raising their five daughters.
Together, Allan and Ilene, shared a commitment to their love of family, Judaism, community, learning and travel. Long time members of Fairmount Temple, Allan was a regular usher, served as president of Brotherhood, Vice President of the Young Peoples Congregation, produced numerous plays and took his family on the first congregational mission to Israel. In 1976, the entire family was recognized for their contributions and was named family of the year.
Like many of his generation, Allan’s hands were never idle. He was an expert gardener, a lover of opera, and the Cleveland Orchestra. With Ilene, they traveled extensively by land, train and sea to six out of seven continents.
Although at times it was often challenging, he remained a devoted fan of the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians and truly enjoyed attending games with his daughters.
Allan retired, but never stopped working. He was a dedicated volunteer with Court Community Service, as well as the Western Reserve Historical Society’s Crawford Auto Museum where he spent many evenings rebuilding cars. His most noted, was fully restoring a 1938 fire engine. He will be missed by his weekly ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) lunch group.
Allan was preceded in death by his great-grandson Marvin Rapport, and is survived by his wife, Ilene, daughters, Wendy Rapport, Meryl (John) Smyth, Susan (Randall) Klein, Nancy (Jordan) Schwartz-Katz, and Laura (Bryan) Loebl. His grandchildren Kate (Pat) Wilson, Aaron (Judith) Rapport, Lauren, Margaret and Maree Smyth, Michael Klein, Alexis Klein, Charna and Elisa Katz, Bex and Charlie Loebl and his great-grandchildren, Isla and Emmett Wilson.
