Dr. Norman James Duncan, of Holden Beach, NC, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2015 in Memorial Hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi. He was born August 31, 1922 in Waterbury, Connecticut to Charles and Elizabeth Kennedy Duncan.
Dr. Duncan served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, and he was engaged in several battles in the Pacific, receiving the Bronze Star in the Battle of Saipan. He graduated from Florida Southern College, received his DDS degree from Northwestern University Dental School, and his M.S. degree in Orthodontics from the University of North Carolina Dental School.
He was an instructor in Operative Dentistry at the University of North Carolina and entered into private practice in Winston-Salem in 1952, practicing orthodontics until retiring in 1987. He was a past president of the Forsyth County Dental Society, a member of Forsyth Country Club, and a member of Lewisville United Methodist Church.
Dr. Duncan was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Marcelle Doub Duncan, and he is survived by his two sons and a daughter: Dr. Scott Duncan and his wife Suzanne of The Villages, Florida, Randall Duncan and his wife Kim of Winston-Salem, and Lisa Duncan Hewett and her husband Aaron of Shallotte, NC. He has five grandchildren, Victor Duncan of Fairfax, Virginia, Dr. Scott Hewett and his wife Emily of Raleigh, NC, Alisa Hewett of Knightdale, NC, Dr. Matt Duncan of Wilmington, NC, and Kelsey Duncan of North Charleston, SC.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2015, 12:00 – 2:00 PM, at Vogler & Sons on Reynolda Road. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 PM at Lewisville United Methodist Church.
