Laurie received a degree in Education (Mathematics) from State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland in 1964, graduating in just three years. She attended graduate school at SUNY, Plattsburgh, New York.
Laurie went on to teach high school mathematics for nearly 40 years, including high schools in New York State, Bishop McGuinness (Winston-Salem) and at East Forsyth and North Forsyth High Schools in Winston-Salem.
She endured tragic loss early in her life, losing her father at age 12, then losing her first husband, William Lee Joubert, to an automobile accident. This left her with her 6-month-old son Michael William Joubert. She later married Robert Joseph McCabe and was happily married for 59 years.
Laurie was an incredibly strong and determined woman with a quiet demeanor. Her work ethic was unparalleled, and she instilled it in her boys' lives at an early age. She would do anything for her family, always there for her children and especially grandchildren.
As a child, she was a member of 4-H, made her own clothes and was extremely crafty. Incredibly intelligent, she loved games and was quite the card shark. She was an excellent quilter. Laurie’s love for sports (especially Atlanta Braves) was legendary. In her time, she was quite the proficient golfer. While living in New York, she and Bob loved snowmobiling! During her career teaching high school math, she was cheerleading moderator and athletic teams’ score/clock keeper - just to stay connected with her sons’ sports. She had an incredible knack for calculating numbers in her head. Later in life, she was the go-to for math help with her grandchildren.
Laurie and Bob had a love for RV’ing, and in retirement lived the winter months in their RV in Florida, making many friends along the way. They enjoyed many trips throughout the U.S. and the Canadian Maritime, including many of the western National Parks.
Laurie has made such a positive impact on so many people’s lives. She has set a great example for her children and grandchildren with her calmness, determination and incredible intelligence. Many former students have said how much she impacted them. She has made life-long friends through the years.
Laurie is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years, Robert Joseph McCabe; sons, Michael (Peggy) Joubert, Robert McCabe and Tony (Lydia) McCabe; brother Malcolm (Jessica) Dezendorf; four grandchildren, Cole McCabe, Jackson McCabe, Isabelle McCabe and Grace McCabe. She is preceded in death by her parents Mary Ladd Hair and Malcolm Dezendorf, first husband William Lee Joubert and brother David Franklin Hair.
A Mass and celebration of life will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church at 4820 Kinnamon Rd, Clemmons, NC at a time to be determined. The family will receive friends following the service.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the caring staff at Heritage Woods Senior Living and Gentiva Health Services.
