Jack H Hughes Jr., 86, of Winston-Salem, slipped away from this earth on Monday, July 23, 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Frances. He leaves behind his children Jane Hughes (Bill Jokela), Jack Hughes III, Betsy Hughes Welker (Mark), grandchildren Jack Welker and Annie Welker.
Born and reared in Roxboro NC, Jack chose to attend Mars Hill College, transferring later to Wake Forest College. He graduated with a degree in history. He also served a tour with the US Navy during WWII. Jack was a long-time employee with Nationwide Insurance.
Jack spent many years supporting musical activities in many of the area Methodist churches. He sang in the church choir and rang hand bells. One of the great joys of his life was driving the church activity bus for youth choir performances. He was known to many area youth as ‘Papa Jack’.
A memorial service honoring the life of Jack Hughes is scheduled for 11 AM on Friday, July 27, at Maple Springs United Methodist Church. The Reverend Jeff Coppley will preside. The family will receive friends in the Craven Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Maple Springs United Methodist Church or the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care Center.
