Glenn Holt, 98, departed this earthly life and was ushered into the presence of God on March 7, 2012. He was born in Chatham County on July 19, 1913 to Charles W. and Lenora Elkins Holt. Along with his parents, Glenn was preceded in death by his wife Ollie Shouse Holt on March 25, 2007. Ollie was the love of his life for nearly 71 years, raising their six children in the Old Town community. He is survived by his children, Barbara Holt Tucker (Tommy, deceased), Janet Holt Bottoms (Ray), Glenda Holt Branson (Dale), John C. Holt (Linda), Sue Holt Couch (Tommy), Tim Holt (Becky), seventeen grandchildren, twenty four great-grandchildren, six step grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Glenn was retired from Western Electric for the past thirty-six years where he was a security guard, smiling and greeting all who came through the gates. His love for music was evident as he devoted 75 plus years singing "Bass" in the New Hope UMC Choir. In high school, Glenn was quite an athlete participating in basketball, the pole vault, soccer, and in 1934 he was the state champion running the mile in 4 min. and 40 sec. He held the record for being the second fastest runner from 1921-WWII (before divisions were established and all 100 counties competed). Upon his death at home, his family and friends surrounded him singing his favorite song, "How Great Thou Art." Glenn will be greatly missed by his family and friends, and for his infectious smile. He lived by the golden rule and was a Christian role model to all who knew him. His philosophy of life was "Be happy with what you have-don't worry, simply trust and obey the Lord." Services will be Saturday at New Hope United Methodist Church on Shattalon Drive in Winston-Salem. A viewing will be at 1:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. The burial will immediately follow in the church cemetery with a visitation in the church fellowship hall afterwards. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the New Hope UMC Choir, in memory of his service and love for music.
