(Part 2) It is everything about him that made me better and everyone whom he touched better. He called me out on my shit and he probably called you out on yours too. He only did that if he loved you, not to be hurtful. He would probably hate that I’m saying all this. He never wanted a big deal to be made about him. I would want to throw him a surprise birthday party, but I knew better. He would have hated that, really hated it. He just wanted to hang out with some people he was close to and that was all the celebration he wanted. He deserved to be celebrated. He did tell me that he didn’t care about a funeral service, that it didn’t need to be a big deal… that whatever his mom and I decided on was for us. I told him we had to do something because there would be hundreds of people who loved him that would want to come. He seemed surprised by this. 
I’ve told him many times that I wish we had met younger so we could have had more time together and he always said that timing is everything. He had impeccable timing… in his witty comments, in his music, and in the actions he took in life. I don’t know where to go from here. We were supposed to grow old together. He was my favorite person, my heart, and my home. I miss him every minute and will carry him with me always. 
His life is not defined by the way it ended, but by the way he lived it and the people he touched. I will see him again someday, my forever favorite person.
Vovi, my love, I am the 'me' that I am because of you. I get my strength from you, my peace from you. You are my home and my Zen. I miss you so much.
I hope I told him and showed him enough how important he was to me and how he shaped my life. I will always be grateful to him for teaching me how to be happy. I am changed from having him in my life and I am changed from losing him.
I am happier now, having had him and lost him, than I ever was before him.


(Part 1)I’ve been writing/journaling a lot over the last year and a half. Mostly just for me, but I’ve wanted to write something about Vovi. I wasn’t able to speak at his memorial and am grateful that his brother and friends were able to. Their words were a beautiful tribute to him.
This is a compilation of thoughts from different times.
I’ve been told that I’m strong a lot over the last few months which seems strange to me because I’ve never thought of myself that way. I’m trying to embrace it or at least ‘fake it till I make it’ anyway. But this is HARD… I don’t like life without Vovi. I miss him so much and am sad every day.
I got my strength from him. I never would have made it through this without him, which is ironic. I never would have made it through school without his support and belief in me. He grounded me and calmed me. I’ve always said he is my Zen and my home. I’m so alone without him here.
I couldn’t speak at his memorial, I just couldn’t. My head was in a fog. But I want to tell his loved ones and the world what he means to me. This will sound cliché because I am not a writer.
We all knew he was funny, smart, kind, generous, creative, talented, methodical, silly, stubborn, supportive, really stubborn. He had a way of putting people and animals at ease. He was a really good friend to others and to me. He was my partner in crime and my partner in everything.
He could be really silly and goofy just to make me laugh or sometimes just to entertain himself. Not everyone saw that side of him. Some only knew his talented and methodical side, some only knew his happy go lucky side, and some got to know his supportive, caring nature. He was so multi-faceted and compartmentalized that so many people only knew one part of him.
I am lucky enough to have gotten all of him and for that, I am grateful.
I didn’t become who I’m supposed to be until I found him, loved him, and felt loved by him. He saved me from my so-called life that I was just trudging through. cont.

Vovi and I were close friends that loved to joke around about 25 years ago and I am very saddened to hear of his passing. He was a good man with the kindest heart. I hope that fond memories of his joy and love for life help you find peace through this difficult time.

You were one of my first trainers at Rockaway. It was always fun working with you.  I remember once day you were asking everyone what thier pet peeves were. I told you mine was "toe thumbs." You thought it was hilarious. I wish I could remember what your pet peeve was.
