Sue Reddoch Burton, 91, passed away peacefully on the morning of February 17, 2022 in Belleair, Florida, surrounded by her family. Sue resided in Belleair since 1974 and in the Clearwater/St. Petersburg area since 1962. She was born in Luverne, Alabama in 1930, the youngest child of John Horace Reddoch and Margaret (Maggie) Leona Athey. Sue was married to James Lamkin Burton and has two sons, Jim and Steve.
Sue graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics in 1952 and completed a Masters of Education from Florida State in the 1970s. She turned her hobby of fashion and sewing into a career where she taught women's tailoring at various locations around Pinellas County for over 35 years. She also taught early childhood development and childcare.
Sue enjoyed bicycling, walking, gardening, going to church and socializing. Her son Jim built her a customized English 3-speed bicycle that she loved and rode until she reached 90 years old. Many neighbors will remember her cycling by their homes. Sue loved her gardens and could be found almost daily removing downed sticks, pruning, planting and weeding. She volunteered at the library through the Friends of the Clearwater Library for over 20 years, and she was a member of the Clearwater Community Women's Club.
Sue was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Clearwater for over 40 years and made many friend over the years. Sue was an extremely warm and outgoing person who had hundreds of friends throughout the community. She was a great cook and loved to entertain friends at her home. Even in her later years after friends had passed away, she continued to stay connected with her many long-time friends.
On February 10, 2022, Sue suffered a stroke that put her in the hospital. The stroke was very serious but she was able to be sent home as she had always wished. She died peacefully on February 17 with her family by her side.
Sue was predeceased by her husband James Lamkin Burton; her parents, John Horace Reddoch and Maggie Leona Athey; her sisters Carolyn Kerr and her husband Alan, Margaret Ward and her husband Charles, and Sarah Sutherland and her husband Joseph; and her brothers Charles Reddoch and John Reddoch, Jr. and his wife Carol. She is survived by her two sons James Burton, Jr (Paula) and Steven Burton (Cathy); two grandsons Ryan Burton (Harmony) and Daniel Burton; one granddaughter Amanda Burton; four great-grandsons Simeon Burton, Oliver Burton, Dante Burton and Elliot Burton; one great-granddaughter Violet Burton; and many friends. May she rest in peace.
The service for Sue Burton will be held at the Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home in Clearwater and it will be live-streamed on the Web on Thursday, February 24, 2022 Link: https://vimeo.com/user163466947. Visitation will begin at 11 am with the service commencing shortly thereafter. Burial will be at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park next to her husband Jim.
