Coach Holt was a good man.  Joe and I shared the experience of being coaches sons at Clearwater High.  In fact, Coach Holt was my first football coach as I did not start playing until my freshman year.  He was so even-keeled, which was amazing in itself given he was raising four giant sons.  That unflappable nature made the moments when he gave us inspirational speeches about our opponents trying to steal our steak dinners all the more memorable.  Coach Holt will always have a place in my memory and my prayers. Taken too young, but certainly taken to a better place.

I was so glad to see him @ the Banquet where our 74-75 Football Team was honored, He was a Tremendous Friend , Classmate I Will Forever miss seeing you.

Joe Holt was an inspiring and encouraging mentor in my personal formation from being a kid to becoming a man. He was not a man of few words. He was a man of quiet and powerful words. I remember his words in many contexts, but I mostly remember the bus rides. Our football days together were embellished with many bus rides together. Some were several hours. In those hours we would engage in meaningful dialogue. Almost every topic was met with his views that we can all do better at whatever we do, even if we are pretty good at whatever it is we are doing, in football and life. Ironically, it was his season ending injury that gave me a chance to get on the field. He became a personal coach to me in that situation. I have always remembered his role as a positive leader and I have admired his life as a husband, father and granddad. All of our love to Abbey and the family.

Joe was a great man and a dear brother. I was fortunate to have him as a roomate for a several years at Furman, to load feight with him at Roadway in the off season, and to coach with him as a GA on the in 1981 championship team.  We had many good times together and even a few good fights. I look forward to seeing him again.

I am often asked “What is a Paladin”?  The answer is simple Joe Holt! Joe embodied everything for which  we all strive. I had the honor and privilege of meeting Joe at FUrman he became a trusted friend and a constant support. Joe had a calm low key demeanor that exuded confident knowledge of who he was and what he could do.  Nothing ever took him out of being Joe.  I remember times when playing got me down or an injury derailed a years work, Joe was always there to pick you up with a word of encouragement and to let you know he had your back. My life was blessed because of having known Joe as a brother and a friend. Abbey please know you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Thank You Joe Rest In Peace

Joe Holt was like a younger brother to me. One bond we shared was Coach Robertson’s Opel station wagon. Joe kept it running until I graduated, then Joe drove it until he graduated. Joe was always there if I needed help. He was a true friend and a great teammate.  I’m glad I met Joe’s sons and Abby at a Furman Players Day one year. Joe and I stood on the field together that day. I’m glad I have our picture. I won’t forget him. My prayers are with Abby and the Holt family.
