Uhrig of Rogers, and Jessie Johnson, AK; brother-in-law Raymond Miller of Tazewell, TN and sister-in-law Muriel Jean Calloway Harbin of Pineville, KY; much loved great grandchildren, great great grandchildren (with another one on the way); adored nieces, great nieces, nephews, and great nephews; wonderful friends and neighbors.
Family was her first love and priority. She made as many trips home to Kentucky as possible during her adult years to see her extended family. They also made many trips to Florida to visit her. There was nothing more important to her than her close family ties.
She relocated many times during the first 10 years of her adult life. She graduated from High school at 16 and moved to Cincinnati to work at defense plants. After marriage and children her priority was always to make friends and get involved with the community. She did pick up a few interesting hobbies along the way. She learned to sew and knit which allowed her to make many of her children's clothes when they were young. She also made matching Easter dresses one year for us and our cousins that were almost the same ages as me and my sister. She even made one wedding dress! When she lived in England, it was horseback riding side saddle even though she was terrified her big horse, Sawdust would step on her foot. It was a struggle to get those riding boots off after lessons.
After settling in Clearwater in the late 1950s, she was active in many projects at our schools including the committee to get a new Safety Harbor Jr High school. Her charity work included Jr Women's Club, Band boosters, Meals on Wheels, and others. She was active in bowling, golf, and was an exceptionally good bridge player.
She and Larry loved to entertain and hosted many parties and holidays for family and friends. She loved decorating for all the holidays. She always dressed in costume on Halloween whenever possible. One year she dressed as a witch to answer the door. I told her it was too realistic. After 3 groups of children ran away screaming, she changed her costume.
She always had a full calendar and found time for more if the opportunity presented itself. If she had a single motto it was “If you want to get something done, always ask a busy person”.
In 1968, when her first grandchild arrived, she was ecstatic. She loved clothes and fashion and would later model for Maas Brothers, Gayfers Department store, and the Safety Harbor spa among others. She now had a tiny little girl to dress up. Mindy recognized a Maas Brothers bag when she was about 8 months old as her Nana visited several times a week and was never empty handed. This was only the beginning as at the end of her life she had 4 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, nine great great grandchildren.
In the 1970s, she met and married the love of her life, Larry. She warned him that he would soon be immersed in a multi-generational expanded family. He was brave enough to take us all as part of the package. This included first airplane trips with grandchildren, many weddings, birthdays and other celebrations with members of the family. We are forever grateful for his love and caring towards the family and especially to her. His deep love for her was always visible to all of us.
She had many titles sister, daughter, sister-in-law, wife, mother, and in later years especially Nana and Aunt Jane. She will be missed by all that were fortunate enough to become part of her family and friends. She will also be remembered with a smile for the love and laughter that she brought to so many.
