Joyce Elaine Hess

Born on July 2, 1931 in Clearfield, she was the daughter of George B. and Dorothy Mae (Dunlap) Smeal.

Joyce wed Lewis Alexander DuFour who passed away on March 11, 1974. Later in life, she was reunited and then married her high school sweetheart, Charles R. Hess.

Joyce was an In-Home Caretaker and also had been employed by McGregor Sportswear, Clearfield. Her most important role, however, was that of mother and homemaker.

She attended the Community Baptist Church, Bloomington, PA and was Christian by faith.

Joyce had a passion for sewing, gardening, albeit flowers or vegetables, and doing crafts, especially working with plastic canvas. Her family still enjoys the many gifts she made them throughout the years.

She is survived by her five children, Timothy DuFour and Judy of Clearfield, Karen Carter and her husband, Albert of Curwensville, Kenneth DuFour of Arizona, Darlene Mae Livergood and her husband, Bradley of Frenchville, PA, Shirley Brooks and her husband, Robert of Ridgway; 14 grandchildren, Timothy, Jr., Daniel, Matthew, Tanya, Robert, Nichole, Annmarie, Elijah, Johnathan, Christina, Stephanie, Eric, Dawn, Ryan; five step-grandchildren, Catherine, Johnathan, Margaret, David, Laura; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Joyce was the eldest of 13 children. She is survived by the following brothers and sisters, George Smeal, Rodnall Smeal, Martin Smeal, Lawton Smeal, John ‘Jack’ Smeal, Douglas Smeal, Evelyn Grubb, Louise Rogers, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Lewis, second husband, Charles who died on October 24, 2004, two stepsons, Edward and David, one brother, Richard Smeal, and three sisters, Patricia Smeal, Sylvia Glace, and Delores Bowery.

Friends will be received at The Bennett & Houser Funeral Home, Inc., 312 Locust St., Clearfield, PA on Friday, June 21 from 10 – 1 PM.

Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 1 PM with Rev. Dr. Duane White officiating.

Interment will be in the Stoneville Cemetery, Boggs Twp., West Decatur.
