Dennis Underwood

The memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, March 19, 2023 in the chapel of McLaurin Funeral Home with Pastor Jonathan Solomon officiating.

Visitation will be held before the service, beginning at 2:00 PM.

Dennis, was born on February 20, 1947 in Johnston County to the late Helen Underwood Bailey. In addition to his mother (Aug ‘22), he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Karen Ruth Baker

Underwood (Nov ‘22), and his siblings: Jackie, Billy and Kenneth.

He is survived by his three children, Denise (Jimmy), Gina (Chuck) and Dennis Jr, “DJ” (Misty), all of Johnston County; ten grandchildren, Carrie, Teresa, Shane, Samantha, Dakota, Michael, Riley, Alhana, and Cheyenne; and six great grandchildren: Adalynn, Kylie, Maddox, Myles, Colton and Carson. Dennis is survived by his brothers Charles (Clayton), Nelson (TN), and Ronnie (TN) Bailey.

Dennis served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam war, earning the Bronze Star. His service as a firefighter, mechanic, and cook was on the ship, USS Hampshire County LST 819 from 1965-1969.

Dennis was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a proud man that gave dependable advice, meaningful conversations, witty jokes, and enjoyed telling stories. He loved animals, with his most

recent pet, Ginger, a Siberian Husky. Dennis will be missed by friends and family but his legacy will live on with all those he touched in his lifetime.
