Cheryl Schell, a beloved mother and friend to many, passed away Saturday July 22, 2023 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Cheryl was born in Portland, Oregon on June 19, 1943 to Nelda and Harry Welker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Schell, and her older brother, Jeff Welker.
Cheryl leaves behind her son, Stephen Duckworth, who she adored. Her favorite part of the day was when he regularly called her after work, which was a special time they shared. She also loved going to library book sales and shopping with her daughter-in-law, Dee.
Cheryl loved all animals, particularly cats and elephants. She loved reading, cooking, decorating for the holidays, and spending time with friends and family. She retired from First Citizens Bank where she developed strong, lasting friendships with co-workers there. She had a group of friends in her apartment building, affectionately known as the Ya-Yas, who regularly played games together in the evenings.
She will be forever missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Parable of Immortality
I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, “There she goes!” Gone where? Gone from my sight . . . that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, “There she goes!” there are other eyes watching her coming . . . and other voices ready to take up the glad shout . . . “Here she comes!”
