Dr. Curtis Phillips passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2016. Dr. Phillips was born in Summersville, WV, and grew up in western Kentucky. He is a Korean War Veteran, serving four years in the US Air Force, including tours of duty in Korea and in southern Japan. Curtis was a graduate of Hawesville High School, in Hawesville, KY. He graduated from Wilmington College (now UNC Wilmington) with an AA degree, and completed his BS and MS degrees from NC State University. He completed his postgraduate education at Duke University, where he was awarded an Ed.D in College Administration. He began his professional career teaching junior high school in the Charlotte, NC public school system. Curtis later transitioned into the NC Community College system with administrative roles at Rowan Community College (now Rowan-Cabarrus Community College) in Salisbury, NC and the NC Department of Community Colleges in Raleigh, NC. He joined Johnston Community College as Dean of General and Technical Education in Smithfield, serving that position until retirement in 1991. Curtis was an active member of First Baptist Church, Clayton, NC, where he served as Sunday School Director, Deacon, and Sunday School teacher for 30 years. He was a Mason and also active in the Clayton Rotary Club, including a term as President. Curtis is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Lee, and two sons: Tim and wife Mary; and Vic. Grandsons Trevor Phillips, Hayden Phillips and Hunter Phillips. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church, Clayton, NC on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at 2pm. A burial service will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Family visitation is scheduled for Saturday, March 5, 2016, 4-6 p.m. at McLaurin Funeral Home, Clayton, NC.
