Marivel Rico Diaz was born in San Diego on August 27, 1979 to Napoleon Sergion Diaz Shelland and Anacleta Diaz Aguilar. She was the second child and only daughter out of 5 siblings.
Marivel spent most of her childhood in Tijuana, Mexico before moving to San Diego for middle school. She attended National City Middle School and then Sweetwater High School where she graduated from in 1977.
She attended some college before getting married in 1979. Marivel is survived by her husband, Jose Rico and her three children: Saharai Whaley, Anavel Duenas, and Jose Rico Jr.
Marivel’s greatest joy in life came from being around her four grandchildren:
Lincoln Alexander Whaley, Age 7
Camilla Rose Dueñas, Age 7
Brielle Alexandra Dueñas, Age 4
Esmeralda Reign Dueñas, 1 Month
We are grateful she was able to meet Esmeralda before she passed.
Before becoming a full-time Abuela, Marivel worked as a caretaker for the elderly. Specifically, she worked with people who were in hospice care. She helped many families with their loved ones as they transitioned.
In January 2022, Marivel caught Covid and has to be hospitalized. She was released in late February 2022 with a prognosis of no more than three months to live. She was referred to hospice care, but she refused and ended up living two additional years at home with her family.
Marivel was known to be a jokester. She was always making jokes and she loved going to the casino. She was also known as the “Mom’”to the entire family – often taking family and friends into her home to help them get back on their feet or just to be there as support.
