Born in Rowan County, NC on October 31, 1940, he was the son of the late William C. Wise, Jr. and Laura Edna Thompson Wise.
Mr. Wise graduated from Landis High School in 1958. He graduated from Catawba College in 1962 with a B. A. in History and Religion and from Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1965 with a Masters of Divinity degree. He received a Masters degree in Counseling in 1988 from Appalachian State University.
Mr. Wise was called to serve as Pastor of several United Church of Christ Churches. He served in Conover, NC, Hanover, PA, Manchester, MI, The Woodlands, TX, and Lenoir, NC. In 1990 he became a program developer of an Intensive Outpatient Treatment program for Laurelwood Psychiatric Hospital and then became an associate at the private counseling practice, Woodlands Family Institute, where he worked until he retired.
Mr. Wise played on the Landis High School football and basketball teams. He was an end and a kicker known as “Joe the Toe.” He was a huge Michigan Wolverines football fan and enjoyed attending Astro and Texans games. He was an avid golfer. Mr. Wise was a member of the Lord of Life Lutheran Church in The Woodlands, TX.
Mr. Wise is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Barbara Linn Goodnight Wise of Conroe, TX; two sons, Chris Wise of Austin, TX and Andrew Wise and wife Alison of Smyrna, GA. He is survived by one brother, Rudy Wise and wife Gail of Landis, NC and one sister, Gay Wise Roberts and husband David of Landis, NC, and sister-in-law Barbara Ann Goodnight Wise of Kannapolis, NC. Mr. Wise is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Morgan and Dylan Wise of GA, Paloma, Natalia and Lila Wise of TX and Kimiko Haughwout and husband, Austin of NC. He is also survived by 2 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Wise was preceded in death by his brother, Doyce Wise.
A family gathering will be on Friday at 1:00 pm at Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home in Landis with graveside service to follow at 2:00 pm at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis, NC. A celebration of life will be held at a later date at First Reformed Church in Landis, NC.
