Dirk Dykstra was born in Niawier, Netherlands on July 9, 1924 to Kees and Syke Dykstra. He grew up in Friesland and immigrated to Canada in 1951 after serving his country for three years in Indonesia. While in Indonesia, he married Henke Valk “by the glove” (by proxy) in November 1946 with a church wedding ceremony being held in November 1948 upon his return.
Dirk and Henke began their life in Canada in Edmonton Alberta where their first two children (Kor and George) were born. In 1955 they made their way to BC and the Fraser Valley where, after working on a mink farm, they eventually purchased a dairy farm in Glenn Valley and had another four children (Liz, Martin, Tom and Clarence). Their next move was to Langley where they started a concrete business and had their youngest child (Sylvia).
Even with the time constraints of expanding a new business and supporting a growing family, Dirk found time and energy to give back to his church community by serving as deacon and elder as well as singing in the choir. As the church grew and new facilities were required Dirk was always ready and eager to lend a hand in the planning and construction. He was a faithful and dedicated follower of Christ and this showed in his willingness to serve as needed.
Upon his retirement in 1978 he continued to serve by driving a school bus for the Christian schools of Langley and Surrey for approximately ten years. His other joys in life included family, fishing, camping, helping others, fishing, travelling, building, fishing…
Dirk and Henke decided to move to the sunny Okanagan in 1992 where they lived for five years.
After celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary Dirk and Henke moved to Chilliwack when Henke was sadly diagnosed with cancer and passed away in October 1997. After a couple of years Dirk courted and married Lyntje Hoogendoorn in February 1999. After fourteen years together, Lyntje passed away in October 2013.
Dirk Dykstra’s life revolved around his Lord, his family, his church community and enjoying the people God put into his life. May he rest in His peace.
“His Lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.’” Matthew 25:21
