Hugh was born on August 21, 1947 to Ruby Jewel Smith Rowland and Francis Graham Rowland in Childersburg, AL. After Hugh graduated from Childersburg High School in 1965, he spent the summer touring Europe. Upon returning he attended the University of Alabama where he obtained a B.S. in Education.
Hugh became friends with Diana in the fifth grade. He would walk her home from school and carry her books every day. After 12 years of friendship, Hugh married the love of his life on June 14, 1969. Hugh and Diana had two children, Courtney and Graham. Hugh spent his career working for the State of Alabama. After 34 years, Hugh retired and spent his time playing with his grandchildren.
Hugh was a loved and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Hugh was a true Renaissance man: Music was an integral part of his life, and he brought an eclectic variety of music with him wherever he went. He was also an automobile enthusiast, a master fixer-upper, and had an encyclopedic knowledge of history and geography.
Hugh is survived by his wife Diana; his daughter Courtney (Adam) Nice, and son Graham (Amber) Rowland; grandchildren Olivia Nice, Gabbie Nice, Harrison Nice, Tailyn Rowland, and Griffin Rowland; brother Buddy (Gail) Rowland. Preceding him in death were his parents Francis G. Rowland and Ruby Rowland Rozelle, and his sister Kathryn Rowland Hatcher.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to one of Hugh's favorite charities: The Salvation Army or Scrollworks--a charity that provides music lessons in underserved areas, c/o Jeane Goforth PO Box 811, Birmingham, AL 35201.
A remembrance service will be held on July 14th at 11:00am at the family plot next to the Childersburg City Cemetery, 8th Ave SW Childersburg, AL 35044.
