This is very sad  news. I met John at a terrible period of my life during which I had experienced many losses. He was a breath of fresh air-light, social, handsome, full of fun. He was well spoken, intelligent, athletic, cultural, and had great business acumen.  In spite of the fact that we were not in touch for many, many years, and that we went in different directions, I remember him with fondness. He was very generous and always a gentleman. It is comforting to know that he had a family he loved and adored. Rest easy. You left too soon.

For some reason this evening, I googled John to see if I could find an updated number and discovered with horror his obituary. I met John at a party at Victoria Flanagan Defty's house in 1983 or 1984...at social occasions over the years...and last saw him many times in 2011 before heading to Connecticut. He always spoke of his children...his love for them palpable. John was so deeply caring, thoughtful and a thinker, so handsome and soft spoken.  And how he loved books! My heart goes out to all of his family. I had been very involved with Fourth Pres and spoke to him about getting involved there no matter what which it seems he may have. May his family find their way gently through this time with the love and support of many friends. May his children know he loved them deeply.

I moved to Cleveland/Pepper Pike at the beginning of our Freshman  year at US. We lived one street away in Landerwood Estates, and as a result of residing in the "country" and not in Shaker,  we became best friends and did everything together (usually with Doug Currier). I must admit I have never been so sad.

We had an enviable high school  formative period together as part of the Great US '78  Class, and to some degree for decades afterward. Driving everyday to school, hours playing and practicing soccer/tennis/paddle, a world-class window-washing business in which Doug and I worked forJohn because he had the car, family and friend roadtrips, double-dates, parties ...

I know John has not been happy recently in his life, and I wish he had availed himself of the support many of us '78ers wished to give. John was a friend and a classmate with a pleasant smile and easy going nature.  I greatly enjoyed knowing John at US and continuing our friendship over the years as we both settled in Chicago. Whether getting together for lunch, having a beer and discussing US and world politics/economics, going to a Wide Spread Panic concert or getting together for a friendly game of paddle tennis, I always enjoyed my time with John.

When I moved to America in 1968, I met John on the first day of third grade at Boulevard School. He immediately welcomed me and invited me over to his house. He had the coolest basement I've ever seen- it was literally a ship.

His friendship continued through our years at University School. John was always a solid person who cared deeply for others. I never heard him say a negative word about another.

In recent years, our paths crossed when our parents moved into the same nursing home facility. I was able to see John on a couple of occasions, and am thankful for those pleasant times.  I just wish we could have more of them.

Be well, John, and thanks for the kindness you showed a scared classmate all those years ago. You'll be missed.

John was such a good friend growing up together in Pepper Pike Ohio, all in our formative years.   I cannot help but think back to those (mostly) wonderful memories trying to figure out who we are as people . . .  We went through a lot of rights of passage together.  
Endless hours riding our bikes anywhere and everywhere, hitting a tennis ball and kicking around the soccer ball, listening to music and doing what active kids do.  Our window washing business that was really a success despite all of the mishaps.  Taking guitar lessons together which would have led to a career in music, but for a lack of talent.   And the whole high school scene, lots of adventures topped off by a crazy trip to Martha's Vineyard, four guys in a Bronco.  

John, I so wish I could sit down with you right now to reminiscence about those times.   You have left us way too early.   

A kind and gentle soul, a friend to all who knew him.  To John's kids who I have not met, I want you to know how grateful I am for having known your father and being able to call him a good friend,  When we saw each other off and on over the years, he spoke about you as the caring and proud father he was.  God bless . . .

Doug Currier

I too want to reiterate the sadness of the loss of our University School Classmate.  We all have fond memories of John and have built lifelong friendships.   I thought you might like to see a picture of John's Sr. Page from the Class of 1978's year book, the Mabian.  As my fellow classmate have said, We are going to miss him. Condolences to his family and many friends.  John lived up to the US motto - Responsibility, Loyalty, & Consideration. 

All of us are so saddened by this loss. John was a  terrific guy known for his calm demeanor, warm sense of humor and noteworthy athletic skills. He was a loyal member of the Class of 1978 at University School. We are going to miss him. Condolences to his family and many friends.  

I am so sad to hear of John’s passing.  John and I were friends in high school but I hadn’t spoken to him in a very long time.  I thought of him many times over the years and looked forward to speaking with him again someday.  We will have that conversation in the next life. God Rest  His Soul.

Very sad about John's passing.  I have very fond memories of John in high school - especially being a budding business owner/entrepreneur and playing tennis.  He always had some business going - lawn care, house painting, etc.  I remember working for John several times during high school in his businesses - he was a great and laid-back boss.  He will be sorely missed. Gone much too soon.
