My heart breaks to hear of Jeffrey's passing. Although my memory has faded a bit over time, I do remember him and Noah as two of the nicest young men when they'd visit the DFC office where I worked with Sue. I'm praying for Jeff's entire family that God gives you comfort and strength as you, no doubt, continue to grieve his loss.

Some people you meet, spend very little time with, but remember forever. Jeff was one of those people. I grew up across the street from Jeff on Spalding and although we didn't speak much after the age of 7, I always hoped the best for him, his brother and mother. Later on in life, through conversation, I found a very close friend of mine went to grammar school with him...and was just informed of his passing. May he rest in peace. He is a true Logan Square Legend.

Twenty-plus years ago, Jeff was a key player in my exploration of Chicago. He was clued in to interesting events and always up for a meaningful conversation. But mostly I was impressed by his championing of our city, embracing hometown pride much earlier in life than most people. Some memorable moments include seeing Art Spiegelman speak and chasing down an Eames chair in the northern suburbs with Henry. Although we drifted with time, I followed along and enjoyed seeing his developments. Today I was shocked and saddened to learn that Chicago got a little less interesting. RIP, Jeff, and healing and warm wishes to the Joly Stein family.

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Jeff’s passing. I met him sometime around 2017 as his massage therapist and grew to know a lot about him, his family, his work, his hobbies over the years. He often inquired about me and my life with genuine curiosity. I also recall how pleased he was to meet my cats when I temporarily did not have an office during COVID and used my home instead. He was always generous and kind, and he loved to talk about the big and small things in life. I never had the chance to meet his girls, but his pride and love for them was evident even as recently as the last time I saw him two weeks ago. I am grateful to have known him.

Jeff and I worked together at FTD.  He was a fine software engineer but more than that, what I remember most was our conversations about woodworking and the projects we were doing.  I am sure there are Hobbies in Heaven and Jeff is smiling down on us as he uses the finest woods, and all of the tools he always dreamed of having.

We are sending love and strength to the Davenport/Stein families and to all who knew and loved Jeff. He was a kind and wonderful person- may his memory be a blessing.

All it takes is one bad day in a world that seems like it's full of too many bad days and then, as Jeff would know all too well from the line of work he and I were both in, there isn’t a ‘Back’ button to undo that pentultmate decision is there? We chatted 6 days ago, but there was enough buoyancy countering his suffering that I missed how much the latter had gained hold. I’ll regret this forever. We’ve all been in this place before, so PLEASE remember: don’t forget to ask for help when you’re in that place.

 This is a tragic loss of a beautiful man, whose life was a real life, full of intensely-felt ups and downs. We met in dot.com era, with an instant camaraderie—even with a 17-year difference in age—nestled in disdain, sarcasm and joy of being alive in a crazy world, then crossed orbits here and there over the following 2 decades. I extend my deepest condolences to his wide, Mary, two daughters, Hazel Juniper and Matilde Grace, and to his family.

I’ll most clearly remember Jeff within the context of 'Fight Club’ (its world a dystopian one, as the one we’re in now), full of vague shades of grey; and as things fall apart we search inside for catharsis, joy and transformation. I’m chasing him (with a dear, mutual friend laughing with riotous glee) as I try to get him back for a Kendo-influenced kick he landed just outside the theater, each of us ebullient, wound up, feeling camaraderie, giddiness and revolutionary fever. You’ve landed a hell of a kick today, Mr Stein. Godspeed to you wherever you are now. You are and will always be loved, admired and deeply missed here.

My deepest condolences to Jeffrey's family.   I knew Jeffrey through his younger sister Alisa.   He was always friendly and kind and never made us feel foolish or small- even during those we're-too-cool-for-the-world years.   His family and friends are in my thoughts.  Sending all my love.

I have known Jeff for many years through Kendo (martial arts) practice. He was a member of our group for years, but he suddenly  disappeared. Many years later we ran into him at a Japanese festival, during his hiatus he had gotten married and had kids. 
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, Jeff returned to practice – he was physically having a rough time at practice…his mind remembering what it was to like to move in his 30’s but his 40’s body not cooperating! But during the “second practice” (the bar), things were once again as they had been. Our conversation was comfortably all over the place as usual… his love of sci-fi, movies, TV, pop culture… And new to the topic list was Jeff’s children. He obviously loved his girls very much.
All of us would like to extend our deepest sympathy and condolences.
We will miss him.

Here’s a photo of Jeff and I from our 5th grade yearbook at LaSalle Language Academy in 1987. We had been super close friends since kindergarten. Jeff was already an accomplished artist, I think he referred to himself as a “drawer” then. We both got out of a month of classes the following year to paint a mural in the school hallway celebrating the language departments, which was a big deal because we hated school, and being sensitive artists was paying off. We would spend the next seven years as friends, competitors and partners in crime. 

At Whitney Young High School, we along with Henry became obsessed with murals and street art—the only real art—which got us in trouble. We would explore the hidden aging rail labyrinths of Chicago by train or on foot, searching for historical markings and fresh ideas, and pore over magazines of street art from around the world—plotting how best to develop our own skills. Jeff’s nom de plume was “Jerk.”

Jeff was also a gifted photographer, which was remarkable for a teen at the time. He had his own 35mm film SLR camera, which he would wear around his neck, and he used it to document his life. He was exploring film post processing at self-service developing kiosks, pushing exposure settings and shifting colors to tell a story with his prints. He was sort of a romantic-futurist, and an unrecognized artistic genius who cared deeply about the world. 

I’m so sorry to hear of his passing. I wish the very best for his daughters Hazel and Matilde, his wife Mary, his brother Noah, his dad, his mom, and the rest of his family and friends.

I may have met Jeff three decades ago, when I dropped my children off at Circle Pines Center, a summer camp he was also attending, he remembered my oldest son.

This fact he mentioned the only time I talked with him.  Mary and I were in a Zoom meeting and he stepped in for a moment. 

I know he made Mary happy and left behind some of his kindness and gentleness in his family.

 

My deepest condolences to Suzanne Davenport, Ted Stein, Noah Stein, and to Jeff's wife, Mary, and his daughters.  Aaron called me just now to tell me about Jeff.  We are both shocked and very sad.  I remember Jeff from as far back as when he was in kindergarten with Aaron in Mrs. Tsuru's class at LaSalle Language Academy.  Jeff was always intelligent and socially aware, just like his parents and brother.  Such a good person and what a huge loss. My heart just aches with sadness.   Suzanne, I am so sorry.  You have my sympathy.

We meet him when he was kid, he was in the same high school with our daughter Loyda! He and Loyda were friends and came to our home very frequently! We treasure all the memories of him! A funny kid and great human being!!

I am so terribly saddened to hear of this news about Jeff.  Many fond memories, and probably some pictures if I looked hard enough. We have to tell ourselves that his fond memories, and many happy times will carry everyone  through this difficult time.  My heart goes out to the girls and Mary. I am very saddened by this.   Be strong. 

Jeff and I were friends from the 7th grade. I have many fond memories of him, from riding the school bus and joking around, to drinking ice cream beer floats (yuck) at the after prom party, to getting pulled over on our way to Madison, to taking care of his kitties. He was a wonderful human being, intelligent, creative, artistic, and sensitive. I will miss him greatly. 

I am so very sorry to hear of Jeff’s passing. We were classmates for years at Whitney Young, and he was ALWAYS a good guy. Funny, warm, sometimes silly, and an amazing artist. 
May his memory be a blessing.

Life is temporary and like all else we have we can hold it only as long as God thinks we should. Now that earthly joys and comforts fail, may the things unseen and eternal grow more real, present, and full of meaning and power.  Let God's strength sustain your weakness, and fill your mind and heart with peace.  Its hard to lose one so dear, but may it help a bit to know that caring thoughts are near. So sorry to learn of your loss. I attended UW Madison with Jeff and worked with him in the computer labs there. I loved his deadpan humor and smile. We had recently reconnected on social media and I did my best to help with transition away from Sears a while back. Again, so sorry to see this news. I hope his family is able to find peace in the memories he was a part of.
