Steve and I worked together for about 10 years.    It was a privilege to spend time with him.   He was both humble and brilliant.  He could take complicated concepts and put them in the simplest terms.

We were saddened by the news of his passing and hope his family will be strengthened  by his memory.

I worked with Steve in a small team at FANUC (Arc Segment) from 1992 - 1996 and in those years the sales team (4 of us) were responsible to grow FANUCs market share but also do service, installations, etc..  We did everything to satisfy the customer.   Steve was an unbelievable mentor to me.   His love of Ohio State was awesome.  He talked often about his family and his daughter's commitment to skating.   I always smile when I think about Steve and I always will.  God bless you Steve.  Peace

I have many fun memories of times with Steve. My most favorite memory is Tennessee tubing with him and Linda, when they lived there after college. Steve told me I would be kicked back in my tube, floating down the water drinking a beer. He was so wrong, as the rapids were so rough I almost drowned!  Driving in his old car, the tubes would fit in the trunk, so we hung our arms out the window and held the tubes as we drove to the water. 

Steve was a good man, fun friend and  great father.  My condolences to his family, and prayers for  his eternal peace.



I retired from FANUC 2 years ago and had the pleasure of working with Steve ever since he 1st joined the company. By the time I retired, we had already worked together on many Service and Engineering projects. Then - somehow - both of us evolved into Sales guys! We again worked together on several large Sales orders and managed to sell TONS of arc welding robots as a Sales Team. We won all of of that arc robot business thanks to Steve's hard work, his technical knowledge, and his experience. There is no question about it - FANUC's customers truly loved Steve - too. 

Steve and I also belonged to a very small, and very close, group of Deer hunters and Fishermen working at FANUC. Without fail, every time we got together we would talk about our good times outdoors. We had so many things in common that we could speak for hours on end, never run out of things to say, and still never get to some of the subjects we wanted to cover...

I last spoke with Steve about a month ago. Both of us had been dealing with our health issues - the best ways we knew how. This was probably the 1st time Steve and I ever spoke (non-business) -without a robot, Deer, or a Fish being the centerpiece of our discussion...

I will always remember Steve's deep concern, and compassion, for what I was going through. Even though he was dealing with his own health issues - Steve was far more concerned about mine.

I pray for Steve's family to find some peace and comfort. 
He will be dearly missed by all of us who knew him - and he will never, never, be forgotten - Most Sincerely - Tom Sparks

I'm sorry for your loss. Steve made the world a better place to live in. He will be missed by many.

My deepest condolences.  May your beautiful memories of Steven soothe your hearts in the days to come.

Steve was one of the original cowboys when FANUC was still the Wild West. We did a lot of demos and developed many processes, products and equipment interfaces in those early years. He made sparks fly in the lab literally. Never knew he could dance till I once saw him step on a live 440 VAC power lead lying on the floor.  Steve did a lot in the lab but neatness took a lower priority then getting demos ready for our customers. 

He also left his mark at the new building before moving on to working with distributors and suppliers. Some serious welding left quite a mark above the lab on the freshly painted ceiling.  I would always think of him and his works whenever I walked by the old lab location.  

Steve’s personality was always special to me. When back at headquarters he would take time to stop to say hi and we could catch up.  Steve touched many people during his short time here; he truly was a unique individual. I’ll miss him.


Linda, Girls, and Family.   I am deeply sorry for your loss.  
I have known Steve for over 31 years since starting at FANUC in 1988. We have worked and played together on many occasions but what is most remarkable about him was that he loved to help people and always made himself available to me.  Steve has been there to lend a hand and with strong patience as he guided me and many others at FANUC.  Steve was a rock solid person with great character, the ultimate professional, witty and wise, he would often find time for some fun (at work).  I learned a lot about roadkill taxidermy from Steve with a harmless prank or two on unwitting colleagues and friends.  When traveling to Ohio, Steve was always open to spending time with me as we worked through many of Lincoln’s opportunities.  I will miss Steve and his wisdom, his kindness, and his humble nature.   
At FANUC we wear many hats and I am proud to have worked so closely with Steve (Stubby61) Sulc;  FANUC’s welding scientist, metallurgist, roboticist, VAX DCL programmer, laser engineer, electronics expert, hunter, and famously, my favorite prankster.  Tom Jackson has been waiting to greet Steve so they both can test that next set of software.  
Steve had developed some strong roots all through his life and will be certainly remembered for a very long time.

Sulc Family - so sorry for your loss.  I worked with Steve in the late 1980's at FANUC in the Arc Welding Segment.  Steve had incredible ability to solve customer problems and overcome adversity.  A great down to earth engineer and person to work with.        He will be missed by all who knew him.

I just recently met Steve as my nephew is his new son-in-law. He was such a lovely man, kind and generous and loving. Please accept my condolences. He passed way too soon.

Steve was a wonderful colleague.  I always enjoyed his professionalism, kindness, and sense of humor.  He was taken from his family and friends far too soon, and he will be missed.

I met Steve more than 19 years ago and always remembered how he was part of the extended Lincoln Electric family.  When I had the chance to begin working closely with Steve again 3 years ago, we quickly rekindled that initial friendship.

Kind, thoughtful, and a willingness to help are words that anyone who ever met Steve would use to describe him.  His friendship in both business and my personal life will always be cherished.  

Rest in peace my friend, you will be dearly missed.

I met Steve 8-9 years ago when I started in Automation.  He was a great guy that I got to know fairly well over the years and a huge help to me in deciphering robot speak to English.  I knew he was always there to help and I relied on him heavily throughout the years.

He will be missed.

I am an Ohio State Welding Engineer and graduated in June 1986.  I began working with Steve in the fall of 1988 when I worked for the Robert E Morris Company and was sent to FANUC to learn how to weld with robots.    Steve was a mentor and friend to a really young guy and greenhorn.   

I began working for FANUC in the Material Joining Segment in the summer of 1994.   Much of my role was to support the Lincoln Electric offices in the Southeast and Steve was at the Automation Center.    He was a steady and constant resource and aid to me.  Toward the end of my MJG days Steve and I would tag team on visits to the Dana plants.   My last speeding ticket (knock on wood) was with Steve out in the middle of Tennessee on a Dana road trip.

I switched to Material Handling in the summer of 2002 but am still an arc guy at heart.   It was always good to see Steve and all of the arc guys back in Rochester Hills or at trade shows when we were together.   

Steve, you have passed way too soon but you did live so well.   You have left behind so many friends and have helped and touched all of us.  God bless you and rest in peace.   We will remember and miss you till we meet again.  

Thank you for being a great co-worker but mostly thank you for just being a great friend.   Carl



I worked with Steve for 30 years. In the early days, he selflessly spent his time teaching me all he knew about the Fanuc robots.   We also played together, flying RC planes and Kayaking. It was a true privilege having Steve as a friend. My life is better for knowing him and will never be the same now that he is gone.  

I have been lucky enough to work with Steve during my entire time at FANUC.  Over the years, he has been one of the biggest influences on my career as a colleague and a friend.  He has been a mentor that taught me about robots, welding and about life.  He has encouraged me to take chances to be successful.  He has challenged me when he thought we could be doing better.  He would celebrate with me so we could recognize what we achieved.  I know that I am not the only one that feels this way, as there are a lot of coworkers and customers that also benefitted from working with Steve.  All of us will certainly miss him but we are all better off because we got to know him.

Steve sold me his ski boat 19 years ago.  I still have the water skis that came with it.  Every time I put those skis on, I think it’s funny that Steve and I used the same size skis.


When I first worked at Fanuc all those years ago Steve welcomed me in with open arms .  One found memory was when we went fishing , I had never seen or been bitten by so many insects and never caught so many fish !   Over the years Steve has still helped  me out and last time we met was in Vegas with Denise my wife . We had a good time till the early hours .  Steve , you made your mark with me and Denise  .  A kind straight forward  man , forever in our hearts over the pond .  My deepest sympathy to all his family .  Love Fraser and Denise . 

Steve and I made a trip to Japan together, I don't recall the date but it has to be late 1980s. We were the first to see FANUC's new Arc Mate robot with RG controller. Steve's luggage was lost for the first few days we were there and I loaned him a shirt on the third day, for those who know both of us my pants were a little long for Steve.

Rest in peace good friend, your wit and willingness to land a hand served you well and enriched our lives.

Steve was a friend at work and at play. He’d always have the answers or would get the for me. 
We went kayaking a couple times, it was awesome, so was flying the remote planes. 
He’s going to be missed.
