Doris Jean Shoemaker

Doris Jean Shoemaker, age 94, of Chagrin Falls, formerly Tallmadge, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2024. Jean was born in East Canton, Ohio on February 8, 1930 to the late Earl and Ruth (nee Bosler) Brechbill. Besides her parents, Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Shoemaker (died 2013), and siblings Betty Gillette, Harold Brechbill, and Glenn Brechbill.

Jean is survived by her daughters Cathy (Tim) Hemry and Cindy (John) Arnett; grandchildren Aaron (Molly) Hemry, Felicia (Ronnie) Powell, and Glenn (Stephanie) Arnett; great grandchildren Abraham (Juanita) Hemry, Daisy (Rich) Miller, Lily Hemry, Timothy Hemry, William Powell, Lauren Powell; great-great grandchildren Jack Hemry and Allison Hemry; sister Shirley (Bob) Baad; nieces and friends.

Jean and Larry married in 1949 and attended the East Nimishillen Church of the Brethren Church until moving in 1967. While they were parishioners, they taught Sunday school to the junior high and coordinated many of their events. After moving to Tallmadge in 1967, they became longtime parishioners of the Tallmadge United Methodist Church and served as financial secretaries.

Jean was a skilled seamstress and for many years she sewed dressed for her daughters. She created the cutest doll dresses and outfits, baby quilts, and stuffed animals as gifts to her family and for church events. Larry and Jean loved to square dance. They attended many square dances dressed in Jean’s custom-made coordinating shirts and skirts. Family and church were always a big part of their lives together.

Jean will be dearly missed in the days to come.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at 12 noon at Orchard Hills Event Center located at 11414 Caves Road, Chesterland, Ohio 44026. Luncheon will follow immediately after at Orchard Hills Event Center.
