Richard Carter

Born to Ernest and Ogreta Carter in Chattanooga, and raised with his siblings David, “Buddy”, and Judy, Richard learned early in life that the world requires hard work and a balance of individual ruggedness and compassionate companionship to survive.

Richard Carter’s life was full of love. He was fiercely loyal to his chosen family, who will miss the rough and tough cream puff.

He is survived by his wife, Valerie; stepdaughter, Macy Licht, and grandson, Jack; stepdaughter Meredith Licht (Josh Tinsley) and grandchildren Ky and Sophie Tinsley; brothers David Carter (Amy) and Melvin “Buddy”; sister Judy Carter Bay; and cousins Joyce Mere (Dan) and Barbara Wright.

Richard lived several lives. His first was as a husband and boilermaker. Richard retired from the Boilermakers Local #454 to care for his first wife until she died from cancer.

He later met Valerie, a nurse, who cared for him. They were married for 17 and a half years when he died.

Richard loved taking care of people and animals, but would deny any such suggestion. He enjoyed sharing and listening to others’ stories, long talks on the porch, and surreptitious ice cream runs. He enjoyed complaining about and completing his honey-do list. He looked for any opportunity to say, “You gotta be smarter than what you’re working with.” Above all, he loved spending time with his wife, his stepdaughter and grandson, and his cats.

A man with a great sense of humor, a knack for sarcasm, and a ready arsenal for a debate, Richard Carter will be sorely and deeply missed.

Visitation will be from 11 AM – 12 noon on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at the funeral home, followed by funeral services at 12 Noon.

Burial will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery.
