Born in Chattanooga on March 15 1931, Fuz was the fourth of four daughters born to local retailer Lou Effron and his wife Lucille. A talented pianist, she accompanied many glee clubs and choirs while still in high school, and later served Mizpah Congregation as accompanist for services and as the director of the junior choir (Mizpah Musicians).
Fuz majored in music performance at the University of Florida for two years before returning to Chattanooga in 1952 to marry Julius "Juby" Spector, founding president of Kleen-A-Matic Dry Cleaners and Uniform Rental. While raising her three daughters, Fuz completed her education at UTC, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in music education in 1970.
After her children started school, she became a volunteer music teacher at local preschool organizations, most notably Little Miss Mag Early Learning Center. In her role as a board member for that historic Chattanooga institution, she spearheaded successful efforts to save and revive it when it was threatened with closure.
In all her activities she made many lifelong friends. She was a devoted sender of hundreds of birthday and holiday cards every year, with a long list of recipients that included friends, family, neighbors, former colleagues, their children, and their grandchildren.
After her husband Juby died in 2002, she embarked on an active retirement, not only continuing her volunteer work for Little Miss Mag and other local groups but also traveling the world in later years with long-time partner Mel Sturm of Knoxville.
Fuz was predeceased by husband, Julius Spector; partner, Mel Sturm; sisters Joy Effron Abelson Adams, Elizabeth Raisin, and Jo Ann Richelson; and granddaughter Beth Harker.
She is survived by her daughters Cheryl Spector (John Bethune), Barbara Spector Siegelman (David Siegelman), and Susan Spector Harker (Tom Harker) as well as four grandchildren and two great-grandsons: Philip Siegelman (Sydney Sevdalis Siegelman and son Evan Julius Siegelman); Rebecca Siegelman; Jessica Lucille Bethune (Greg Brown); and Miranda Carolyn Bethune (Jeff Stanmyer and son Reed Owen Stanmyer).
Services will be led by Rabbi Craig Lewis at Mizpah Congregation in Chattanooga on Wednesday January 31 at 1:00 pm, with a graveside service to follow at the Mizpah Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Fuz to your favorite charity or to Mizpah Congregation, B’nai Zion Synagogue, or the Chattanooga Jewish Community Federation.
