Joan Shulman passed away on August 8, 2020 in Bishop, Georgia at the age of 87. She was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 17, 1933, to Eli and Lillian Golubow. She grew up in Borough Park, New York and attended nursing school at the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital. She married a southerner, David Epstein, who brought her to Memphis, Tennessee, where she had her three children. The family later settled in Chattanooga, where they were members of B’nai Zion Synagogue.
Joan’s life passion was nursing and she enjoyed a decades long career as a registered nurse,
retiring from Campbell Clinic in Chattanooga. Joan loved nature and the outdoors, especially taking long walks with her dogs. She was an avid gardener, and always enjoyed cooking and baking for her family. She also loved to read and listen to classical music, and she was a fan of British TV shows.
Joan moved to Denver, Colorado with her daughter where she met and married Ralph Schulman. She and Ralph lived briefly in Israel before returning to Chattanooga, where Ralph passed away in 2003.
Joan was welcomed into her granddaughter Samantha’s large extended family in Bishop, Georgia and it was an especially happy time for her.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband Ralph Schulman, parents Eli and Lillian Golubow, her son Jesse Epstein and David Epstein.
She is survived by her daughters Elaine Epstein and Dani T’wanda (Judy Epstein), granddaughter Samantha Jackson (A.J.) and great grandchildren Sarah and James.
The funeral was held on Tuesday, August 11 at the Lakewood East Memorial Gardens.
