Frank Armon Newby, Jr, 86, died October 9, 2019 at his home in Tunnel Hill, Georgia. He leaves his sons David and wife, Joy; Daniel; Mike and wife Stacey; Peter and wife Kristin and his grandchildren, Joshua, C.J., Nick, Katrina, Abi, Matthew and Connor. He was predeceased by his second wife Martha (aka Julie). The family would like to recognize special friends Janice Parr, Matthew Paynter, Rachel and Tucker Roach.
Frank was the son of the late F. Armon Newby and Bessie Stonecipher Newby of Columbus, KS. While growing up he was an active 4-H Club member and carried his love of farming and being outdoors for all his life. He graduated from Cherokee County Community High School and attended The University of Kansas as a Summerfield Scholar. He remained there for graduate work and completed his Doctorate degree in physical chemistry. He remained an avid Jayhawker and believing in the value of education, he established an endowed scholarship for science students at The University of Kansas.
In 1959 Frank came to East Tennessee State College (now East Tennessee State University) teaching physical chemistry and retired from there after 38 years of service.
Frank helped cut trails in the Buffalo Mountain City Park of Johnson City. He enjoyed woodworking and listening to classical symphonic and big band music.
He was a Type 1 diabetic and was proud to receive an 80 year plus Joslin Diabetes Medalist award. “I got this award because I lived.” In support of continued research in the treatment of diabetes, Frank made a posthumous organ donation to the Joslin Diabetes Center, an affiliate of the Harvard Medical School.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made the Dr. Frank A. Newby, Jr. Physical Science Award, Fund Account # 41010, KU Endowment, P.O. Box 928 Lawrence, KS 66044-0928 or to the Joslin Diabetes Center, One Joslin Place, Suite 745, Boston, MA 02215
