Bertha Mae “Bert” Rogers, 87, died Thursday, April 22, 2021 in her home from complications related to cancer. She was in hospice care for one month and two days prior to her death. Bert died peacefully in her sleep.
She leaves her daughter; Deborah (Andrew) Hawkins, Brentwood, TN; son Ronald Rogers, Chattanooga, TN. Grandchildren; Lamonica Thompson, Florence, Al, Veronica Hawkins, Seattle, WA, Ryan (Christina) Rogers, Chattanooga, TN, Jennifer (Joseph) Kleinhenz, Stone Mountain, GA. Great-grand children; Brittany Fuller, Florence Al, Zachary Beckwith, Phoenix, AZ, Erroll Thompson Jr, Florence, Al., Haven and Nova Kleinhenz, Stone Mountain GA. Nephews; Michael (Carolyn) Slay, Oak Ridge, TN, Gregory Slay, Rosamond, Ca. Dewayne Rogers, Chattanooga TN.
She is preceded in death by her mother Emily Butter, who died in the 1930’s, her Father Hubert Sr. who died in 1963, her sister Thelma Slay, 1964. Her brother James and Thomas. Brother Houston in 1977 and Hubert, Jr. in the 1990's. Devoted Step-mother Virgia L. Rogers, died in 2015.
Born in Colbert County, Al, January 12, 1934. Her mother passed while Bertha was a little girl, her father worked for TVA and traveled with the construction of the Dam's across the southeast. Bertha spent many of her early years with her grandmother and family in Allsboro Al. A Chattanooga, Tennessee resident since the late 1940's, Bertha graduated from Howard High school in 1954.
In the years that followed, Bertha worked as a baker at a private school TN. A Nurses Aide at Erlanger Hospital. She was a therapist for National Healthcare and retired from there after 30+ years. She was a member of various Chattanooga Bowling leagues, winning many team and solo competitions.
She joined Allen Temple AME church in 1996 under the leadership of Pastor Johnny Watson. She served on the Usher Board and the Culinary Committee. She was one of the "Saints of Allen".
Bertha loved socializing and being with her friends. She was a member of several social clubs.
It was her wish to be cremated.
Due to the Covid Restrictions there are currently no viewings of cremations. A private memorial service will be scheduled at a later date at Allen Temple AME Church.
