Ann Elizabeth Horn Childers, age 90, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2017, in Decatur, GA. A Mississippi native, she attended the University of Southern Mississippi for two years before setting out to see the world as a hostess on a Southern Railway passenger train. With a regular layover in Chattanooga, she met and married Charles Childers, a Chattanooga native and railroad employee, in 1953.
Ann and Charles (who passed away in 2013) moved to Decatur in 2006 to be near their son, Fred and his wife, Maureen, but Chattanooga was their home. Their life together there centered around family, church, friends and work. 1965 was an important year in that journey. Ann started work as the secretary at East Lake Elementary, a job she loved. She and Charles also joined Ridgedale Baptist Church and became active members of that faith community. At school Ann covered many extra duties, dispensing medications to students, serving as an officer in the PTA, and any other extra task that came her way. At church she worked with the Sunday School program, the Training Union program, and chaired the Child Development Center Committee and the Kitchen Committee. After retiring from the school system, she was actively involved with the Baptist Women for many years.
She had a wry sense of humor, a kind smile and was a rock for many along the way. Her parents, Luther and Amanda Horn and siblings Luther, John, Ruby and Richard preceded her in death. In addition to Fred and Maureen, she is survived by three step grandsons, William, Thomas and James Evans; a beloved sister in law, Raye Horn; numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Brainerd Chapel. Dr. Bill Owens will officiate. The family will receive visitors at 10:00 a.m. and a reception will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ridgedale Baptist Church or a charity of choice.
Arrangements are by the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 8214 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.
