Chatham- William Peyton Smith Sr., 89 of North Chatham and native of Braintree, MA died June 15, 2010, He leaves his wife F. Ruth (Miglich) Smith formerly from Massillon, Ohio. They have been married 61 Years.
Bill was a graduate of Thayer Academy and Cornell University, School of Civil Engineering. He served in World War II, where his battalion landed on Utah Beach. He fought in the “Battle of the Bulge” and met the Russians at the Elbe River in Germany. He was awarded the Silver Star for Gallantry in Action in France in 1944. He also had Five Battle Stars and was honorably discharged from the Army Field Artillery as a Captain.
Bill was President of the Board of Trustees of Thayer Academy, was elected to Thayer Academy’s Sports Hall of Fame and was President of the Kiwanis Club of Quincy. He was a Director of Quincy Cooperative Bank, Hancock Bank and Trust and Bank of New England South. He was on the board of Wm. B. Rice Eventide Home and the South Shore YMCA.
He was President of Clark and Smith, Inc. of Quincy, MA and later Chairman of the Board of Ford Construction Corporation, Norwell, MA and was involved in the construction of many buildings throughout New England.
Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing bridge and golf. He belonged to the Innisbrook Golf Club, Tarpon Springs, Florida, Cohasset Golf Club, Cohasset, MA , Piper’s Landing Country Club of Palm City, Florida and was a member of Eastward Ho Country Club of Chatham, MA for 50 Years.
In addition to his wife, he leaves four children, Joanna Cahoon and Judy Smith of Chatham, MA, William P. Smith Jr. of Scituate and Steven R. Smith of Pembroke, MA. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and one great granddaughter and a sister, Barbara Andersen of Long Boat Key, Florida.
A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Chatham, MA, on July 9, 2010 at 10:30 AM.
