John Peter Mangels, 76, of South Chatham, MA, passed away on August 1, 2013, at Eagle Pond in S. Dennis with his wife of 54 years, Marion Turnbull Mangels at his side. He is also survived by his son, Andrew Peter Mangels of Amherst, MA, his daughter, Cynthia Mangels Makar and husband John, of Little Egg Harbor, NJ and his brother, William A Mangels and wife Ann, of Baltimore, MD. He leaves five grandchildren, Nancy Mangels, Sarah Mangels and Alex Mangels of Amherst, MA and Johnathan Makar and Elizabeth Makar of Little Egg Harbor, NJ. He is the son of Margaret and John Mangels.
Known by his middle name, Peter grew up in Ozone Park, NY, received a BS from Tufts University and a MA in counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. He taught HS science and then was a HS guidance counselor, specializing in college placement. The majority of his career was spent at Ossining HS, Ossining, NY. He and his family lived in Ridgefield, CT for 32 years and were recently part time residents at Linden Ponds in Hingham, MA.
Peter was an avid duplicate bridge player and was an ACBL Grand Life Master. He loved swimming, having been a competitive swimmer in HS and at Tufts. He was a manager of his son's Little League Baseball teams and supported his daughter's competitive swimming for many years. He loved working in the yard, walking his Airedales, building stone walls, traveling and spending time on the beach with his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 13th at 11:00 AM at Pilgrim Congregational Church, 533 Route 28, Harwich Port, MA. Internment at the South Chatham Cemetery will follow the service.
