To the perpetual memory of Elizabeth M. Moye, who died at Liberty Commons on November 9, 2017, after a long illness. She was 89 years old. The daughter of M. Harry and Catherine Monks, she was born and raised in Waban, a village of Newton outside of Boston, along with her siblings Arthur and Frances. She attended Lasell College in Newton and worked in fashion before her marriage. She married her husband of 67 years, John H. Moye of Chatham, in 1951. In 1958, they moved to Cape Cod, where they raised five children. With her children grown, Bess turned her attention to her external career: with her good friend and partner Meta Hutchings, she established Cabbages and Kings Bookstore, which grew to a thriving signature store on Chatham’s Main Street, becoming a favorite of visitors and residents alike and receiving numerous accolades and awards from business and professional literary organizations. She and the store were featured in an article fittingly called “Not the Retiring Type” in Cape Women Magazine in 2001. Her well-known “literary luncheons” were a favorite with both the audiences who attended and the authors who were invited to read and speak. She was also active in a variety of projects and causes involving youth, from the “Drop-in Center” on Depot Road in Chatham to American Field Service and the Fresh-Air Fund Host Family Program. She is survived by her loving husband John; her children John, Thomas, Richard, Timothy, and Catherine; and her grandchildren Elizabeth, Julius, Fiona, and John. She is also survived by loved and loving nephews, nieces, and their children and grandchildren. As a resident of Liberty Commons during her final illness, Bess was treasured for her cheer and generous spirit, and the family is grateful for the wonderful care given by staff and caregivers, especially during hospice care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Bess’s name to the Boston chapter of the “Room to Read” organization for children’s literacy and girls’ education (www.roomtoread.org/chapters/boston, 415-839-4400). A celebration of her life, open to all family and friends, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham, MA. -- For online condolences please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com Finis vitae sed non amoris
