Benjamin C. Goodspeed

Benny was the son of Benjamin K. Goodspeed of North Chatham and the late Ruth Allyne Boone from Alabama. His roots can be traced back to one of the founders of Chatham and to the famous Daniel Boone.

Benny was predeceased by his mother Ruth Allyne, his grandparents, George and Dorothy Goodspeed Sr. of Chatham and Oscar and Mabel Boone of Alabama. He was also predeceased by his aunts and uncles: Gladys and Dick Lumpkin, Dorothy Thorpe, Louise Stinson, Daniel Boone and Jack Boone.

He is survived by his father, Benjamin K. Goodspeed, his uncle, George Goodspeed Jr., his wife Linda and their son George III. Benny is also survived by many cousins from both North and South, as well as many close friends-especially Elaine Margarita of Dennis. He was particularly close to his cousin, Donna Lumpkin of Chatham.

Benny was born on a summer Friday Night and his birth was announced at the Chatham Band Concert where his grandfather, father and uncle played. This was a sign of things to come as he played trumpet with the band from the age of 14 until 2018. He also played in the Dreamers Dance Band as well as in local youth groups.

He graduated from Chatham High School in 1973 and continued Automotive Studies at Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colorado.

He worked as a mechanic at his dad’s, Goodspeed’s Gulf Station, as a painter at Chatham Bars Inn and as a house painter and window washer in the community.

Benny was a member of the Chatham First United Methodist Church and the Scouts.

He was a good golfer and liked playing at Eastward Ho! and Cranberry Valley. He liked most music especially Blues, Jazz, Rock & Roll and Band music.

Benny enjoyed boating, fishing, swimming, spending time at North Beach camps, white water rafting, reading and hearing about Chatham history. He was an avid fan of the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots.

The family expresses gratitude to the doctors and staff at Cape Cod Hospital for their care, respect and concern. They also express gratitude to the Windsor Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for almost six months of care and compassion.

The services will be held at the First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Friday Nov. 8, 2019. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Seaside Cemetery in Chatham.
