Agnes McCarthy

Agnes D. McCarthy, 99, of Chatham, Massachusetts passed away peacefully on January 25, 2023 at her home. Agnes was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on February 10, 1923. She was the daughter of the late Romeo and Miriam (Liberty) Dumouchel. She was raised in Cheshire and Waterbury.

Agnes was a graduate of Russell School, Crosby High School and Saint Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing. She continued her education at Catholic University of America, the University of Bridgeport and Fairfield University where she received her Master's degree. She was married to Maurice F. McCarthy Sr.

Agnes was the office nurse in the private practice of Dr. Louis Olore, M.D. for a number of years. After receiving her Master’s degree, she taught nursing at Saint Mary’s Hospital. She later became the Educational Coordinator for the hospital. Agnes would say that her greatest accomplishment in nursing was the development of the allied health program. This program was designed for high school students who were not college bound. The high school students were trained in allied health roles in the hospital while they attended school. They worked part time developing their skills. The students were a ready pool of talent once they graduated from high school and completed the program.

After retiring, she relocated to Chatham, Massachusetts where she spent more time enjoying family. She loved to rake for clams, get out on the water and outer beaches, shop for antiques, make quilts and decoupage. Her real enjoyment was always learning so she loved to go to the Chatham Library. She joined the Memoir Writing Group many years ago and enjoyed writing her weekly story for the group.

Agnes was predeceased by the love of her life, Maurice. She is survived by her children, Maurice (Jane), Margaret “Meg” (Craig Kappel) and Stephen (Joanne Russo). She leaves her grandchildren, Tracie, Patricia and Christen. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Robert and Daniel Hartman and William Knight as well as many nieces and nephews.

Her family would like to thank the caregivers from Home To Stay and Beacon Hospice for their great care and kindness, particularly during the last year. We would also like to thank the Eldredge Library Memoir Group for the great gifts of writing, sharing and relationships that meant so much to Agnes.

She will be buried in Waterbury and services will be private.
