Matthews, NC - William (Bill) Henry Todd, Jr. passed away peacefully at home, after a long illness on February 14, 2022, with his wife Sue and daughter Julianne lovingly holding his hand. He was the son of the late Marion Kennedy and William Henry Todd, Sr.
Bill was born September 27, 1946, at Alachua County Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. He spent his childhood in Jacksonville, Florida after his family moved there in 1947.
As a teenager, Bill was proud to represent his school in local and state science fairs and held the honor of being an Eagle Scout. He attended Ortega Elementary School and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1965. Following graduation, Bill attended Berry College in Rome, Georgia initially because his mother found out they made all the students go to church on Sunday. His time at Berry College became some of his favorite memories. Bill was well known on campus as the guy who ran the Coffee House and played Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary, and other 1960s favorites on his guitar there. He graduated in 1969 with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Math, eventually going on to get a job as a chemist in Wisconsin where he met his wife, Sue. Bill and Sue were married in 1980 and moved to Houston, Texas where their daughter Elizabeth was born. They later moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where Bill worked in the Engineering and Financial Bookkeeping field and their daughter Julianne was born.
Bill and Sue raised their family in the Charlotte area and were active members of St. Stephen United Methodist Church. Bill was a loving and devoted father, always willing to help with math homework, attend dozens of dance recitals and school music programs, softball and basketball games, and encouraged his daughters to pursue their dreams.
Bill was a talented woodworker and built many pieces of furniture for his home and several pieces for his daughters’ American Girl Dolls. His love of MG cars started in college and continued through his life resulting in him restoring five MGs over time, along with a 1965 Chevy Van. He took pride in his yard, always wanting the best grass in the neighborhood. Bill was very handy and spent countless hours fixing things around the house and tinkering in the garage. In later years he became a 15-year tax preparer for H&R Block and a loving grandfather. Although Bill was a man of few words, everyone knew of his pride for his family and how much he loved Sue, Elizabeth, and Julianne.
Bill is survived by his wife, Susan Amond Todd; children, Elizabeth Todd (Robert) Perris, Julianne Lynn Todd; grandson, William Jackson Perris; granddaughter, Catherine Marie Perris; sisters, Catherine (Lamonda) Wilber, Patricia (Todd) McGee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The service to celebrate and honor his life will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 in the chapel of McEwen Funeral Home, 10500 Park Rd., Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends following the service.
