William Michael Teeter

William Michael Teeter, 70, of Matthews, was born Feb. 2, 1953 and passed peacefully into eternal life on July 12, 2023 after his heroic battle with cardio-pulmonary hypertension and COPD disease. His struggle was marked with patience and dignity.

Mike grew up in Asheville, Houston, and Charlotte and graduated from Myers Park High School. Upon HS graduation, he briefly attended East Carolina University, but his sentimental artist soul soon found him drawn to the construction trades, where working with his mind and hands gave him the most satisfaction. Becoming a master stone and brick masonry contractor, he would soon work on some of the beautiful old homes in the Myers Park and Dilworth neighborhoods.

For a few years he lived and worked in Sunset Beach, SC, building a church and other commercial projects.

Mike was a master craftsman in the building, design, repair, and refinishing of furniture, especially antiques. Through the workmanship and mentorship of Larry Graves of Graves Furniture Shop, he developed a passion for furniture repair. He was happiest in the solitude of his home workshop, working alongside his dogs Sam, Lola, and Shultz.

Before his retirement in 2020, he worked the past eight years as a maintenance and construction supervisor for Myers Park Country Club. Mike could build with his mind’s eye a project both functional and artistic.

His life and his work were both interspersed with his struggles and battles with substance abuse. He would faithfully seek guidance through his deep faith and treatments at the McCloud Treatment Center in Charlotte. Indeed, up to the last week of his life, he attended his weekly treatments with the Center. His family is forever grateful for their support. He had friends and family who loved him dearly.

He is predeceased by his father Clyde E. Teeter, and his sister Cyphya Teeter. Michael is survived by his mother Dorothy Teeter, brothers Ed Teeter and David Teeter of Charlotte, and half-brother Ted Russ of Concord. Surviving also are his nieces Jessica Teeter (Michael) of Charlotte and Jillian Luyster (Peter) of Quantico, VA.
